Van Malone to Join Klieman’s Staff

Van Malone will be joining Chris Klieman’s staff, coaching cornerbacks.

Malone is a former safety at the University of Texas, who also spent a few years with the Detroit Lions in the NFL.

His coaching career is varied, and includes stops coaching defensive backs at Western Michigan, North Texas, Texas A&M, Tulsa, and Oklahoma State. Additionally, he served as the recruiting coordinator during his stint in Tulsa, and spent a few years as SMU’s defensive coordinator.

Malone is well known for his strength in recruiting, particularly in Texas. This should help to alleviate many concerns about Klieman’s previous lack of experience in recruiting Texas high schools, which many feel is a necessity for winning in the Big XII.

The hire brings a fresh face into Manhattan who isn’t associated Snyder or Klieman’s previous staff.
