Frosh not staying for year 2

Post by SCKSCat » April 29th, 2024, 8:44 am

There is a high number of freshman from last year who were 4 and 5 star rated that have entered the portal. Almost every team has lost promising players. We lost 2 such players. Duke lost several. Iowa State lost Omaha Biliew.

In May there is going to be a mad scramble for these kids.
If you were a coach, would you recruit them?
This to me is one of the most troubling things about the portal.
Seems these kids think that they should be stars right away.

This is a statistical analysis of why kids are entering the portal.
The crux of the article it is for more playing time somewhere else.

i suspect both ours left because coach recruited over them. that was certainly the case with r.j.

ames may have a gone for a bag of money since his announcement came from his agent. it will be interesting to see if he ends up at illinois or some other p6 conference team.

With the advent of NIL, High School recruiting will likely take a back seat to portal recruiting IMO. Why go all out on HS Talent when you don't even know if their game will translate to the major colllege level? Just get a few proven guys you know who can already come in to contribute & get your team the points to win.

All the things the ignorant old guys said would happen are coming true faster and to a greater extent than imagined.

I think the players who were freshmen this year did not realize NIL would go crazy. I think a big part of the reason they are leaving is to get their share.

High school recruits need to be paid with a renegotiation annually.

Some people are starting to advocate revenue sharing with players and creating rules and conditions to reign in this lunacy.
But boy some big hurdles have to be overcome, namely having one league representing all of the participating programs. Eliminating boosters from player compensation and cheating schools like KU automatically denied any compensation for the school for the year in which cheating occurred.

But I doubt the schools who have the loot now or broadcasters will ever let this happen. Maybe free enterprise in an unfettered environment is the way to go providing public tax dollars are not involved in subsiding college sports programs l8ke at UConn.

From AOL News. Note JT Toppin of University of NM, top league freshmen of the year, in his parting words said basically UNW was a stepping stone. Note how the agent convinced him to leave. And notice the agent will get a cut of the new NIL deal. Puts it into a nutshell as to what is happening.

"The Lobos were confident after talking with Toppin and his family shortly after the season ended that he would return, but his agent, Ramon Sessions with the On Time Agency, ultimately convinced the Texas native that it would be in his best interest to explore playing elsewhere. Sessions, who had an 11-year NBA career after playing at Nevada, suggested Toppin's best chance at becoming an NBA player is to play in a larger conference.

Players are allowed to have agents in the new world of player compensation being allowed through use of their name, image and likeness. Toppin did not have an agent when he came out of high school in the Dallas area, a four-star recruit that somehow went under recruited in Big 12 country. The Lobos showed great interested in Toppin not only until he signed with UNM, but head coach Richard Pitino last summer told the Journal he believed Toppin would be the Mountain West Freshman of the Year. That came true in March by voting of both the media and coaches (he was co-FOY in the coaches' voting).

Toppin's NIL deal with UNM this past season did not include money that would give a percentage to an agent. His next NIL deal, which the Journal is confident in reporting is expected to be at or above $500,000, will have a percentage going to Sessions."
