Overall, K State was an average team this year because they turned it over too much and did not shoot it efficiently from three. It is that simple. A better leader on the floor would not have changed that. Coaches should have corrected the tov issues in practice and game planning. And we should have recruited better and more consistent shooters.

a good summary most of us will agree with, xtra.
Why is there something rather than nothing?

Ames & Will McNair were fairly good last night against Iowa. Many of the other players had a rough night against the Hawkeyes. This is a game that could've been won, but the long balls weren't going through the net, unlike Iowa's long range shooter: Sandfort, who was 7-11 from 3pt. range. Compared with KSU's best long gunner, Ames who was 4-5 from 3pt. land. As a previous poster had noted KSU may have very well won if Ames shoots a few more from downtown & K-State has just a few less torunovers (although KSU had 13 TOs to Iowa's 12). Hope we can retain the youngsters who have largely improved as the year went by. Ot would be nice if Carter, Kaluma & DNG return (not sure on any of these 3). And also get some veteran dudes thru the portal to augment what we have returning (i.e. Ames, Jones, Colbert who all improved thru the year) & also Castillo who appears to be a top flight freshman.

Iowa handled KSU's defense tonight with team work and surgical passing. They have better shooters, and a better offensive scheme. They are the better team. KSU played a sloppy offensive game and tried to rely on their supposed edge in athletic ability, but that wasn't apparent. Iowa matched KSU athletically and for much of the game was quicker and more decisive in their decision making. KSU played like they were in a pick-up game at the YMCA. There's something to be said for teams that play with a higher basketball IQ. They will almost always beat you.
PD, the 2024 Iowa/Nebraska style of basketball has a mediocre ceiling. I agree with your points that last night without time to prep KSU got cut up on the road. But I will take the Tang style because the high end ceiling is a national championship.
So what is the "Tang style"? Turnovers ...one on one basketball? Are you saying that this "Tang style" can win a national championship? I think we've seen the new high ceiling. It's Connecticut, with their combination of athleticism, good shooters, efficient offense, good fundamentals that don't lead to turnovers, a stingy defense and a smart, savvy coach. That ain't K-State.

This loss, which was the final nail in the coffin of a failed season, was not about their guy making shots and our guy not making shots. That's a ridiculous and false assessment of this basketball game, and a feeble excuse for losing this game.

Their guy made shots because he was wide open and basically unguarded, with the exception of one fade-away jump shot from the left baseline. Our guy didn't make shots because he was suffocated by Iowa's defense, led by their fine point guard Perkins. Aside from that, Iowa was the sharper team ... a better passing team ... a more disciplined team ... a better prepared team ... and a better coached team. Swallow hard and quit making excuses for this loss. These are all the many reasons why this team lost almost as many games as they won.

I don't know what kind of scouting report Tang and his assistants prepared for this game, but it was a failed one. So that part of it is on Tang.

And just maybe this team lacked a leader. I certainly didn't see one out there last night. Last year this team had two leaders. Boy, did we miss those kind of guys! Perry is not a leader, he's a gunner. Kaluma is not a leader, he's a pouter. Carter is not a leader, he's a turnover prone, erratic player. The only one who even comes close to being a leader is David N'Guessan, and he doesn't play enough.

Every team has their personnel issues and loses players, either to injury or to idiotic, self-inflicted circumstances, so I'm also tired of hearing excuses for not having a couple of players who would have made us "great". BS. Every team is dealt a certain hand and must play that hand. Why is this team given some kind of imagined handicap for who they are? Season over. One and done, not in the NCAA, but in the NIT. That says it all.
You realize that Iowa had 13 tovs. Same number KState had.

We outscored Iowa 50 to 36 on two point shots. And shot 67% on those two point attempts.

Iowa State had some open three point shooters but so did KState. IE the ones that Jones and Carter missed.

The guy that went 7 for 11 was guarded just as close as Perry on his threes. Their guy is on a roll the last few games and should have been denied the ball like we did in the second half. So that was a coaching error that was corrected at half time.

KState had some breakdowns on defense. Partly due to playing Rich and Jones more minutes.

Perry was in a shooting funk the last two games. Shots he missed last night were just as open as the ones he made in last years NIT where he was the tourney MVP.

But maybe Glover and Tomlin were those guys.
Tomlin shot 40% from three at Memphis with 1 tov per game.

I don't care. Iowa was the better team, regardless of how you spin it.

The "guy's name is Sandfort, and he WASN'T guarded as close as Perry (did you listen to Tangs's press conference when he said they couldn't find him). Then KSU face guarded him in the second half, but in the mean time, he was screening, cutting and setting up other teammates who continued to score, and grabbing offensive rebounds which kept possessions alive. You profess to be some kind of a basketball expert, but your analysis of this game is flawed and biased. There's more to the game than scoring and temporarily closing down a shooter. That strategy backfired, because Iowa is a savvy team. (why don't you listen to the McCaffrey press conference like I did and learn how Sandfort was used during the second half, and how he helped his team win).

Oh, and one other thing. KSU finally "lost" Sandfort again late in the game and he delivered two 3-point daggers that put the game away. Great players adjust to how they are guarded, staying patient and playing within himself - and that's what Sandfort did (still scoring 10 second half points). So much for "face guarding" and denying him the ball ... until he was lost again, and ended KSU's season.

Not saying turnovers aren't or weren't a problem. Certainly TOs needs improvement. But this year's team averaged 14.8 turn overs per game. Last years averaged 14.3 turn overs per game. Last years team went to the elite 8 and won a lot more games. This team lost in the first round of the NIT to an average program and couldn't reach 20 wins. 0.5 turn overs per game difference wasn't the difference folks. Again, not saying it doesn't need improvement, it certainly does. Just saying that's not the primary issue this season.

Last year we had the best point guard in college ball, who did turn the ball over a lot but he was an assist machine with 2 very good finishers to get the ball to!

If one dives into the statistics, the biggest outlier is the decrease in points scored per game. Defensively, we only gave up 1 more point per game this year than the previous year. Steals were down, blocks were up, and rebounding was better this year. TOs we're up by 0.5 per game. But scoring differential last season was +6 per game and this year +1 per game. That's a 5 point per game differential on scoring differential. FG%, FT%, and 3 Pt% all were down this past season. Its pretty glaring. The intangible difference was this year's best talent was very young and inexperienced. Last year, the program had experienced leadership and experienced talent. Take youth plus struggling to score consistently and a team will struggle like this one did at times. But the fact that we beat KU, Baylor, ISU, BYU, etc. shows we had the ability to shine at times. We're going to be fine. Just stay the course and keep grinding.

I rewatched the first half. Tylor Perry took 8 threes and every one of them except the last one to beat the half time buzzer was just as open as Sandfort's shots. Sandfort is 8 inches taller and both have a quick release. So Perry was probably more open. Your statement that Perry was suffocated by Iowa's defense is incorrect and shows you are not an objective observer.

No doubt in that game, Sandfort was a better shooter than Perry. And he is 20 for 40 in the last i4 games so he is on a roll.

Hard to see how Iowa ran better offense than KState when Kstate was 22 for 30 at the rim and Iowa made 18 two point shots total. If you like layups, K state's offense delivered.

So both teams played good on offense and bad on defense. Will Mcnair and DNG along with others fouled too much giving Iowa a big advantage in that area.

It is iowa had better three point shooters in this game. And got to the line more. Even low bbiq observers recognized that. Blame it on Tang not recruiting better shooters, or whatever you want.
