The portal is a double edged sword, I think. It is exciting seeing the potential of guys who are interested and come to play at KState. But by the same token, they can all leave just as easily as they show up. Incoming freshmen are still mostly immature, I blame covid and AAU ball for that, and many times they feel entitled to playing time. For whatever reason a coach won't play them--might be lack of defense, lack of basketball IQ. It might be their body language and discipline, or it could be their work ethic. Either way, they are not meeting the coach's expectations. So those guys are looking for a way out to.... satisfy their egos, I guess.
I don't like the portal in basketball because there seems to be no fences, no loyalty, no playing for each other because they deserve better than the rest of the guys. I think it will eventually even out, but it is going to take a while to put that cat back into a bag. Kids matured more when they transferred and had to sit out a year, which tested their 'how bad to you want it?' lobe in their brains. It allows them to continue to be selfish and immature, which means it is hard to coach kids who don't think they need to be coached or developed more because they're good to go.
I think it is different in football. High school seniors show up on campus seeing that they need to add muscle mass to compete. The redshirt for incoming freshmen is the norm. In basketball skinny and scrawny won't keep you off the floor if you can shoot and are fast. Basketball redshirts don't exist any more it seems. They'll leave to see who is willing to butter their bread without them having to really commit to their school, their coach and their teammates.
A person can be a socialist in a capitalist society, but a person is not allowed to be a capitalist in a socialist society.
