Just checked Joe Tipton's Twixter account.
Man the rush to the portal has begun.
Michael Potter's brother who played for Pepperdine has entered, looks good.
At least the Portal allows a team to get better quicker, but whiff or strike out, it can have ugly consequences.
I feel fo a mid major team that finds a 3 star player and coaches them up to be good and then lose them to a NIL laden team.
I still fear.NIL may ruin college basketball like money has ruined major league baseball.
The irony of it is that really good players are going to the mid-majors because of the portal. It is harder than ever for high school players to make a team even in D2 these days, much less a mid major.
Exactly. And I hope this is something the kids on our team who are thinking of transferring are taking into account. Look at how many kids go into the portal in both football and basketball and have to either go down a level or two or not get picked up at all.

I know it can be frustrating for guys like Rich and Manning to not get more minutes, but Rich is a true freshman and Manning is a redshirt freshman. Unless the coaches sit them down and "suggest" they should transfer, why not stick around and develop yourself into a better player like it used to be done up until recently.

1. Mid majors and non power 5 schools are also having good players transfer down for playing time. IE Max Edwards and Selton Miguel.

2. Things will settle down a little after this year when a full year of Covid eligible 5th year players are no longer part of the equation. For example, Perry, McNair, Abmas, Disu, Shedrick, Horton and Cunningham would not have played last night sans Covid. A full year of under clasmen scholarship players have been pushed out by these Covid super seniors. One more year of that.

The NCAA has updated its transfer portal memo, making it clear that multi-time transfers who transfer during or after the current academic year can be eligible to play at their new school next year without a waiver.

It will hard to retain players to build a program. Bench players will want to move on to get playing time somewhere else. Like what happened to KU.
Agreed. I like Tang's resume so far. If he can keep building, sooner or later KState will be attractive. He is building the right culture at KState, and hopefully, that will keep some good players from jumping to the portal after every season.
Some get their yangerdoodles all bent out of shape about all of the Tang culture building, player loving, and young men character building stuff. They want him to worry about basketball and let the players ' mommas and/or gang leaders do the personal stuff. It's about winning baby like Frank did. Well iin today's world your program's winning is going to be short lived if you cannot retain players once they are in your program. Players will not stay if they do not feel like a program is their second home. Gruff Dad style of Bill Self isn't working. Kids need more than a snazzy dorm to live in. Gene Taylor was pretty dang smart to realize the modern needs of players and hire Tang. I will take a bible thumper kid any day over a gang bad ass head thumper.

Unfortunately, these college kids sometimes need a father figure, and Tang is willing to fill that role. I don't think it is his idea, but I work for an athletic coordinator that is pushing the idea that high school coaches should help put their players on the path to be a good man and a good husband. Tang would be the finisher of that idea. Unfortunately, there are coaches out there that are all about the winning and not so much about what is good for the kid.

You think that they won’t be working the portal if they’re still playing post season? I’m very sure they still will be.

Always play as many games as you can and never pass up competitive court time. Get your young guys minutes in the very least.

Really? Boy learn something everyday.
I read Notrh Carolina declined an NIT invite to concentrate on the portal. They snagged some good players and had a very good year. There are some who advocate that players cannot go into the transfer portal until after the final 4. This is a worthless point since kids are declaring that they will enter the portal, and their NIL agents put out that they are open for business.

I think it is important to get as many eyes on KState basketball as possible. There will be a lot of good players in that NIT that will be entering the portal, so why not give them a look at what KState is all about?

I would like to see KState get away from the one-and-done guys. Team continuity is important. Gotta find guys that are both good and will stay for more than one year.

K-State has done a tremendous job with their athletic programs. Also, an amazing job with our facilities. Where in college sports is there a more beautiful and efficient complex than what we now have.

We are hitting on all cylinders and now the NCAA has poured sand in our tank with NIL. I don't like NIL but if we are going to participate in this new world we have to take advantage of all opportunities. Given our financial condition I think we can compete financially especially if we do it strategically.

I say we go after a prime big man. We have always struggled in this area and now we can make it a priority to pay a top big man for his name, his image and his likeness. Play it by the rules but get him. Offer Ngonba a deal that will be very hard to refuse and we will find out if he really wants to come here. Also send a message that we have deep pockets and are not one to be trifled with.
