As a fan I am tired of getting my heart broken and unrealistic hype

Post by SCKSCat » March 6th, 2024, 9:05 am

I keep reading if we do this or that we can get into the NCAA Tournament.
Just win 2 of the last 3 and a Big12 tournament game and we are in ... well that didn't go well.
Now it's beat ISU and 2 Big 12 tournament games .... enough, the horse is dead.
Manning was going to be all conference... what a load of manure.
Competing for titles promised .... I am dubious.
Some fences with fans need to be mended and fan expectations need to be more realistic. At least Coach Tang cares and wants to do well, but ....

Yeah, I get what you are saying. This has been a tough year and a lot of it stems from listening to things Coach Tang has said and as a result, getting your hopes up because we are fans. When you are told that Tylor Perry is the best shooter in the country and then for much of the season he can't make a shot, it is frustrating. When you are told Manning is a future all conference but he never leaves the bench, that is frustrating. When you are told that you completely changed your offense AFTER you played five games in an overseas trip and you changed it so that you can get elite big guys, and then you have to play without elite offensive big guys AND you haven't signed any either, it gets frustrating.

We definitely did not follow up the Elite 8 with anything to be excited about. As a matter of fact, much of the stuff from this season even off the court has been less than ideal. The thing at Iowa State gave Coach Tang a black eye, warranted or not, that was not good press. Self talking last night about Tang and staff doing fly-by handshakes, I don't like that at all, nothing worse than the fly-by handshakes. Suck it up, be a man, and shake the other coaches hand.

I am still 100% on board with this staff, but I also have some pretty big red flags moving forward and at some point I just want to see less talk and more performance. I can see why fans of rival schools think Coach Tang is phony and just full of hot air.

Get this season over with, shut up and go to work to make your program better, honestly that is what I want to see. No more talk about the fans or how great incoming players are or any of it, I will be just fine with the basic coach talk from now until we see better performance.

I was hoping for a top half league finish. Did not get it done but being hard to judge how being without two high minute guys in Tomlin and Glover impacted the results. I expect we make tournament if we have either one of those guys.

Having Tang set high goals is not an issue to me. But after we lost Tomlin and Glover, his goal was to get 9 wins and make the tournament. His comments were pretty clear about that. So he fell short.

But
Big 12 coach of the year last year. Elite 8.
Disappointing year this year. Have to settle for the NIT.
Now 2 and 2 vs KU.

I am looking forward to how the end of the season progresses and hope to see more of the young guys in the remaining games. Biggest concern with what I have seen from the freshmen is they do not appear to be dawgs on defense. IE. Lack of steals by Ames.

And then after the season, I look forward to what the roster looks like for next year. We need some bigger wings and forwards that can score.

It is sometimes a fine line between optimism and hype. Is it hope or is it hype? I think he says what he believes to be true but sometimes things just don't work out. I will advocate for Tang for at least his first 5 years. I doubt we can do any better. Even the greats have down years.

This is my thing. Just choose your words a bit better. It is perfectly fine to say "Tylor Perry can really shoot the ball, he is a heck of a shooter," something like that, but when you throw in the "best in the country" nonsense, it puts an unfair target on that kids back. Same with Manning, just say you think he has the ability to be a good player, but saying all conference, just is over the top.

As puff has said many times, things are never as good or as bad as you think they are. The program is still in a good place and with a few tweaks and additions to the roster, a good year next year is still very possible.

I don't think Tang has the program where he needs it to be to sustain deep tournament runs every year. It was a surprise he took last year's team to the Elite 8. It takes time to build that kind of program like KU and Baylor. We all need to take breath and trust the process.

The Cats are two good players from being a great team. It is going to happen. I believe in Tang. Crazy faith, baby!!

I think it has come to fruition how important Nowell and his point guard skills were. We've had a slug of TO's due to lack of ball handling skills. Hopefully we get better at that.

Anyone who followed KSU last year knows that Nowell had trouble with TOs at times. He just had assets that overcame them like double digits in assists, and he got a lot of steals as well.

Tang is fine - Linton is not.
