Question about team building
Since it looks like only two of the players on next year's team will have played together before, what would be a reasonable time line for them to start functioning together in a game as a team?
What can a coach do to accelerate the process?

I would think 90% of the process of acclimating to each other would take place in summer practice. Then the process slows down and it will take several games to up to a couple years to really synchronize. Just lots of practice and game time. And more on the roster helps so that you can play with the same guys more of the time!

Here's what I do know about growing as a team. You can't do it if you don't have the numbers on your roster. Even if you have only ten, there will be injuries, illness and other factors that will deplete your practice roster. Five on five, with good players is essential for growth. If you have to tap into the intramurals for players, you are doomed. Right now, we have 7 players. I'm sure we'll fill out the roster, but with what? Guys good enough to push each other in practice? Intense competition for minutes played is a crucial ingredient.Sir Ocelot wrote: ↑May 27th, 2022, 5:03 pmSince it looks like only two of the players on next year's team will have played together before, what would be a reasonable time line for them to start functioning together in a game as a team?

I've no reason to believe Coach Tang will not fill out his roster with good, serviceable players. Recruiting is never really over. This year will be no real measurement of Coach Tang's recruiting ability. It's just a start, not the end or the middle. ;)

How many years under our last coach did we play with 2or3 of our 13 player who could not play because of injury? Were we unable to come together as a team?

I agree with you, except that I am very pessimistic about them filling out the roster. Saying that 10 guys are going to fly is kind of niave. Unless, they plan to get some paid walkons that are given NIL deals instead of scholarships. The captain of the Duke team entered the portal as a 5th year sr. He didn't play much, but I am certain he has some talent.pulitzerdavid wrote: ↑May 28th, 2022, 8:10 amHere's what I do know about growing as a team.
