Spike Lee needs to learn American history...

Post by MajorAppleCat » February 13th, 2019, 11:51 pm

"Spike Lee labeled famed explorer Christopher Columbus a “terrorist” during an interview Wednesday while also urging the United States to be truthful about the country’s past."

"Lee was wearing a black hat and a hooded sweatshirt, both emblazoned with “1619,” the year which he said “the first slaves were brought to this country, Jamestown, Virginia."

Spike Lee needs to look up the definition of "presentism" and learn about African slave history... slavery wasn't started by Europeans....

"Slavery has historically been widespread in Africa, and still continues today in some countries."

"African states played a role in the slave trade, and slavery was a common practice among Sub Saharan Africans before the involvement of the Arabs, Berbers and Europeans. There were three types: those who were slaves through conquest, those who were slaves due to unpaid debts, or those whose parents gave them as slaves to tribal chiefs. Chieftains would barter their slaves to Arab, Berber, Ottoman or European buyers for rum, spices, cloth or other goods. Selling captives or prisoners was commonly practiced among Africans, Turks, Berbers and Arabs during that era."

"The kings of Dahomey sold their war captives into transatlantic slavery, who otherwise may have been killed in a ceremony known as the Annual Customs."

In the 1840s, King Gezo of Dahomey said:

"The slave trade is the ruling principle of my people. It is the source and the glory of their wealth…the mother lulls the child to sleep with notes of triumph over an enemy reduced to slavery…"

Technically, the first "slaves" brought into Jamestown were treated as indentured servants.... and earned their freedom after 7 years.

I submit that the american indians also displaced other tribes as they spread, established.

who, I ask, do they pay retributions to? and I wonder, to those of us in this country who feel they are obligated to receive reparations: to whom do YOU owe reparations?

I can see it now 'wait' 'what?!?'

if a person really wants to dig into history

Slavery is a nasty practice. But Americans certainly didn't invent it. That said, it's still a blot on our history. IMHO, the time for reparation has long past. History moves on. So should people.

I doubt that there is a nation in the world who has spent more and tried harder legislation-wise to correct the ills of slavery than the U.S. And, despite cries to the contrary, we're making remarkable progress -- and that's a good thing.

Every day that there is no wall on our southern border, the sex slave trade thrives. If things were flipped and the democrats/liberals/progressives/socialists wanted the wall, the conservatives would be called racist for allowing brown people to be bought and sold every day. But as it is, sex slaves won't live long enough to vote, so.......

No one is apologizing for slavery. No one needs to apologize for slavery anymore than a doctor needs to apologize for how their profession treated patients a 100 years ago. Almost every race, color and creed suffered through some sort of indignation and degradation. Judging history through current mores is tantamount to playing basketball under the original rules promulgated by James Naismith or playing football without the forward pass. It is absurd. The same goes with wanting reparations for having been a descendant of a slave. Everyone needs to get over it.

Spike Lee is nothing but a race-baiter.

Why exactly are you so upset MAC? The labeling of Columbus as a terrorist?
