Oh, it's already happening. The ACC Network, which is owned by ESPN, is launching this August. ESPN will be promoting the heck out of both the SEC and (especially) the ACC. There is an article now on ESPN's website justifying the current playoff system, saying that it puts the two best teams against each other, which happens to be one from each conference. The article criticized those who are bored of seeing the same two teams every year, playing for the national championship.

can say this: once upon a time bowl season was awesome! now? not so much. has so much less to do with 'who's playing whom' than the play-off has really opened the gap between games that have interest and games that are nothing short of exhibitions.

ultimately, to really 'make every game matter' the system needs to change.

take it to a 'win or go home' level.

but those 'periphery' games won't go away. communities and chambers of commerce have a big investment in them. to further make the point: how insignificant has the Rose Bowl now become? I can't even tell you 'when' it was played or WHO was in it.
