Big 12 tough for Patterson

Post by Opensource » December 5th, 2018, 9:26 pm

I was looking at Patterson’s TCU record. Boy the Big 12 is tough to be consistent year in and year out. A record in a non power 5 conference doesn’t mean much.

Compare pre Big 12 and Big 12 years. Would you be happy with is record?

TCU is a good case study on why current schools like Boise State and UCF shouldn't ever be in the NC discussion. It's one thing to play a non-P5 schedule against lower level schools throughout a whole season and win versus playing a full schedule against P5 teams week in and week out. Sure, those schools can win one-off games in bowls or preseason play, because they are good teams (likely legit top 25). But play a full schedule in a P5 conference and win out is a whole 'nother challenge.

TCU / Patterson winning % non-B12 - 79% (elite winning %)
TCU / Patterson winning % in B12 - 63% (still respectable but far from elite)

I hope someday the playoff goes to 8 teams. Let that 1 undefeated non-P5 in the playoff picture and see what happens when matched up to an Alabama.

The more SEC teams like Georgia this year dont get in, the more the media will push for an 8 team playoff.

The more that Notre Dame gets in, knocking out a P5 conference, or when the SEC gets 2 teams in, or when the Big 10 and Pac are left out, including Ohio State, the more the push will be for a 8 team playoff. When the Big 12 got left out, no one cared, but the media darling Ohio State gets left out it's an issue.

Until they expand it to 8 and allow the conference champions in, it will always be a popularity contest.

I want 16 w all 10 conference champions and 6 at large (will never happen), but am fine with 8 giving the P5 champions, the top G5 champion and 2 more at large.

You still get your debate, but are guaranteed that the 5 schools earned their way in rather than just having the reputation that they "earned" it.

Absolutely on your first comment. But I think I would be good with 8. The 5 conference champs, any P6 schools ranked in say the top 15, but only one pee conference and if not any ranked that high then the top ranked school among them all. Then you have the possibly of 2-3 at large. No conference should be allowed more than 2 teams in the playoff.

Better be careful. I got blistered a bit in another thread just the other day, when I said I didn't think UCF deserved to be in the Playoff last year and still don't think they deserve to be in this year. My opinions. But I think your thread hits the nail on the head. Play a P5 conference slate or at least get a few good P5 conference teams sprinkled in. The UCF's and Boise's know that SOS is a an important factor in the selection. Anti-up!

Top 10 final ranking 43% of the time? I could probably live with that.
