JUCO football moved to the spring

Post by SCKSCat » July 16th, 2020, 9:48 am

The NJCAA has decided to move its football for community colleges to the spring. I wonder what ramifications this will have on these kids and recruits

Recruiting wise, I can see teams leaving room open for late evaluations of JUCO players so they may not be filling up classes as quickly as previously. It may actually benefit a team like KSU who isn't going to fill out a class with 5* so they have the luxury to wait a bit and get the JUCO players that rise to the top.

Many Kansas Juco players (Jayhawk Conference) attend college the summer right out of high school and the next summer between their frosh and soph years so they can graduate In December of their soph year. That way they can sign with their NCAA school and participate in spring football. They depend on film from their soph year to get those scholarships. This year many soph won't have a second year of film until spring; setting them back a semester at their NCAA school or some may take a lessor offer without playing spring at Juco.

The playing of football in the spring has been discussed at the UIL level (high school sports body) in Texas, but I don't know how serious it was.

Some local sports reporter in town here claims that the Texas high school football season will be whittled down to five district games.
