Wait. Are you insinuating that Larry Brown, who is as pure as the wind-driven snow, would do something so unscrupulous as to hire Ed Manning (who was driving trucks at the time) as an assistant coach simply to get his son Danny, who just happened to be the top prospect in the nation? Nah. I'm sure Ed was just the best coach available at the time.

Uh, that happens all the time, even at Kansas State. It’s currently going on in our women’s program.stlcatfan wrote: ↑April 17th, 2020, 12:45 amWait. Yes it does, but some actually have better credentials to work on the staff and it looks far less on obvious move then going from truck driver, or associate director of video to assistant coach.Hypeman wrote: ↑April 17th, 2020, 6:49 amUh, that happens all the time, even at Kansas State. Carr played 6 years in the NBA. He they went on to form a skills academy and coach both AAU girls and boys. He then spent 5 years as a HS basketball coach. KSU also didn't hire him directly to an assistant coach, he first came in as a director of student-athlete development. Even without a daughter that played, those are enough credentials to get someone hired for that role. If he didn't have a daughter that he wanted to coach, he actually would have made a decent hire in the mens side given he played for Chris Lowery, when they were looking for a coach this year (very similar to how Brad Korn ended up at KSU via Lowery).
AAU coaches and HS coaches get hired all the time for their connections to players, like Ronnie Chalmers and Dalonte Hill, and those seem a bit more believable. Lets see how long Cunningham stays at OSU once his brother is gone. I can't recall too many times that it was an older brother though, mostly is parents or close coaches.

It sounds like older brother has the background to make it look legit, like most of these situations.AJcat7755 wrote: ↑April 17th, 2020, 9:43 amYes it does, but some actually have better credentials to work on the staff and it looks far less on obvious move then going from truck driver, or associate director of video to assistant coach.

It would have been believable if Carr would have joined the men’s coaching staff, but the timing etc. of his arrival to the women’s team makes it pretty obvious he joined as payment for his daughter’s services.
All schools do it. KSU is as dirty as most outside the super slimy schools like KU or Baylor or Louisville or North Carolina or Kentucky where they start venturing into criminal actions.
One other thought, if coaching AAU helps make one qualified. Nearly every dad in America is now qualified to be an NCAA coach! Their dream has come true! (That was supposed to be a joke)

no doubt carr was hired due to his daughter's aptitude. but to suggest he's not qualified is silly.

I found it interesting that Williams said he was looking forward to playing with the #1 playing in the nation for a couple of years. If Cunningham is the #1 player in the nation, he definitely won't be staying for Williams to play with him more than one season. So he is either fooling himself or buying recruiting drivel there.
Then he says this is just a business decision, Coaches at KSU will understand because they are millionaires. Sounds like a line fed directly to him from the OSU staff. I can hear that response when he just kind of sheepishly mentions to them that he kind of committed to KSU.
Then Williams says that Boynton is a really honest guy, or something to that effect. Isn't that kind of Bruce's thing, good or bad, that he is almost too nice of guy.
I thought WIlliams wanted to play close to home. Well, his family sure could have visited him much easier in Manhattan than Stillwater.
Look, this is a recruiting miss by Bruce and the staff because there is no reason OSU should be able to out-recruit us on this kid, let alone steal him at the end after being their second choice. Our staff may have worked him more, which makes it more frustrating that he spurs us for OSU, especially since we have an Elite 8 and a Big 12 Championship in our near rear-view mirror while OSU hasn't even made the tourney.
That being said, the posters on here are right. This kid thinks he is a top 50 kid, but the coaches around the country clearly do not agree. He is, no doubt, talented, and I guess we shall see how talented. But he also clearly isn't the most grounded kid.

I don't see this as a recruiting miss. Not after reading his recent comments. This staff did everything they could to land this egomaniac. I don't think he's a high character guy. Selton Miguel plays the same position and is higher rated.

I think a lot of high school kids in sports, academics, and other areas often have themselves or their abilities over rated. He seems to think he is a finished product when in reality he is a work in progress. DW likely has a lot to learn. The question is how and if he will learn it, or will he continue to rank himself higher than his pay grade? It likely it comes down to one thing, immaturity. How quickly will he grow up? Will he continue to be a bad actor? Only time will tell. This is pretty common among high school heroes. As the old saying goes "Welcome to the Big 8"
