If anyone deserves a raise, it's Hazelton. He took a defense that for the better part of a decade had been soft and underachieving. In one season - and with mostly the same personnel - he completely changed the culture and the results.

I'll personally donate to the cause, because my health is 10X better now and I'm at less risk of a stroke or heart attack. My blood pressure has dropped 30 points. All of that simply because we don't play soft coverage out of fear of getting beat (even though we continually still got beat deep).

In all seriousness, he is worthy of a raise.

Well, to be fair, his schemes were complete opposite of the last several yrs under synder. Hard to be aggressive when u are forced to play 10-15 yds off the WRS every play.

I think the point is that BS’s philosophy may not have allowed KState to achieve what was possible. While the season records were ok, we clearly had some talent in the secondary for a number of years that MAY have been more effective with more press schemes. Not saying BS was wrong, but my belief is that he was unwilling to adapt on this and other issues (recruiting being one).

We don't know how he treats his assistants away from gameday. I can tell you firsthand, that some of the most generous guys on earth are very competitive and get in your ear on gameday. Most football coaches will tell you that passion is good. Some guys handle it differently, but I've coached with and for guys like Gary and I've had coaches yell at me. No biggie, as I knew it wasn't personal.

Comparing Prince to Patterson is a joke. #1 Prince doesn't know football like Patterson, #2 Prince has done squat in the profession compared to Patterson, and #3 I don't think Patterson purposely humiliates people to feel big. He is just passionate and emotional. Big deal. His players and staff knows that. I love his passion and work ethic. Love CK's too.
I'll agreed this is probably the case, I just know watching a game there are several times it gets quite heated between him and Sonny Cumbie. https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/sp ... 48377.html

i personally know a former tcu defensive coach who says gary is bat-shiz-crazy. personally, i believe patterson is a bit overrated. certainly not in the class of bob stoops, bill snyder, or mack brown for that matter.

i've watched old k-state video, back in the 90's, and snyder ran a press defense then just as ck does today. i'm not sure why he went away from it other than trying to adjust to b12 spread offenses. isu's three-man front is great for defending spreads but we saw how that works against a road-grader saturday night. isu never adjusted.

and finally, senior defensive players - goolsby, durham, and others - have been very complimentary on twitter about hazelton's staff. i believe ck's coaching group is both deep and skilled. it will be hard to keep them together.
Why is there something rather than nothing?

I don't know Patterson, but I think he's in the conversation with Snyder (Snyder with the edge), but I believe wholeheartedly he's superior to Mack Brown. Gary is 172-70 overall with a .711 winning percentage. I realize that he used to coach in a lesser conference, but he did something that a lot of coaches couldn't have done like him. He transitioned into a P5 conference, struggled, made the adjustments and ended up battling for the playoffs in 3-4 years. That is impressive, considering he did it with mostly 3 star talent.

As I said, I don't know Patterson, but I do know a few in the business and most HS and college coaches I know have a more favorable opinion of Patterson than Brown. The belief is that Brown road talent to wins. Patterson and Snyder outcoached people to wins.

Patterson pre P5 conference:
109-30 (78.42%)
68-18 in conference (79.07%)
5 conference titles (1 CUSA, 4 MW)
8 top 25 AP finishes and 3 top 10 AP finishes in 11 seasons
7-4 in bowls

Patterson after joining the Big 12:
63-40 (61.17%)
39-33 in conference (54.17%)
2 conference titles
3 top 25 finishes and 3 top 10 AP finishes in 8 seasons
4-2 in bowls

It will be an interesting year for TCU in 2020. If TCU doesn't at least bounce back and make a bowl game, does Patterson's seat get warm? How many years will TCU fans accept if Patterson doesn't get back to his double digit win totals?

And their OOC schedule won't be a cake walk, but they do get 5 Big 12 games at home.

@ California (7-5 team with a bowl game)
Prairie View A&M (FCS team)
@ SMU (10-2 team with a bowl game)
OSU (gets a home Big 12 opener)
@ WVU (softer 1st Big 12 road game)
KSU
@ BU
OU
ISU
@ UT
TTU
@ KU

"Fear the Beard." Hazelton is the one we may lose someday or if CK leaves then he would be a possible choice as Head Coach.

Bill was well-respected. But, he was not fun to play or coach for. He was not a social guy. The 1.0 coaches all left because they had options and had no personal relationship with Bill. They were Stoops friends and that was more than the OU money in the move. CK will be able to keep coaches because he is well liked until the offer is too good to pass up.
