Fan Sided Take on Barry Brown in Summer League

Post by xtrawildcat » July 9th, 2019, 6:01 pm

Barry Brown gets the number one take away from Fan Sided after the second Timberwolve Summer League game.

Minnesota Timberwolves: 3 takeaways from Las Vegas Summer League opener
1. Barry Brown Jr. deserves some attention
Barry Brown Jr. was a four-year college player at Kansas State. In his senior season, he earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors as well as First-Team All-Big 12.

Although undrafted, he was given a chance to show his skills by the Minnesota Timberwolves signing him to a summer league deal. Never known for being a shooter, Brown Jr. always had the ability to score the ball in other ways. He is also clearly an excellent defender from his awards in college.

Both of these abilities showed today. In just 17 minutes of action, he scored nine points while producing two steals. He also showed his athleticism on two solid dunks. While this may seem small, all teams need a player who can do it on both ends.

Although there is no guarantee he will get a roster spot in the regular season, after his showing today he has proven he at least deserves more attention from Timberwolves fans. His energy and spark off the bench were key in their dominating victory over the Hawks. Brown Jr. seems to be a guy that will always give you full effort and should be a hard worker.

It is still early in the 2019 NBA Summer League, but Barry Brown Jr. certainly will continue to make a case for even a G-League contract. His game is very similar to Josh Okogie’s, so maybe playing alongside each other will be for the best this summer.

I know many here don't follow the NBA, but Brown's closest comparison is Avery Bradley. Solid defender and decent offensive guy, but not really a PG.

On another note, Marcus Foster is with the Orlando Magic but hasn't been getting a lot of minutes.

And Barry so wanted to be a big time shooter. I think he thought he was going to be that guy but the shot never really came around. Credit to him for adapting his game and getting to where he still has a shot at the NBA.

Watched Barry play in the first half yesterday. The other team had a guard going off and they put Brown on him. That guy scored about three straight baskets on Barry and he was taken out so only got a couple minutes in the first half. I looked at the box score and he ended up with 7 points in 9 minutes and one steal. Was 2 for 3 on threes.

Brown is not doing a good job of playing pick and roll. Communication and or coaching maybe. I don't know but he needs to improve that area of his game.
Conversely, Dean Wade is doing a great job on pick and rolls in the games I have watched.

Hope Barry catches on somewhere. Stokes too. Dean Wade is versitile enough I think. He can be a 3 guard or a stretch 4. Can play small with out being small.

I watched Minnesotas game against Dallas last night. Barry came in with about 3 or 4 minutes left in the first quarter and played most of the rest of the game except for a couple of times they took him out for rest. He was second leading scorer for Minnesota with 14 points and the Timberwolves blew Dallas out. Hit the two open threes he took. Took the ball to the basket 5 times with two layups and got fouled on another one. Also missed one easy layup he would normally make on one of the drives. He was able to take it to the rim any time he wanted. Not being double teamed on every drive makes him really effective. His defense was stong in this game.
Timberwolves play again today in the semi finals at 7pm on ESPN2.

Lets hope he can have another strong game.
