ncaa forms player name and likeness committee ...

Post by tmcats » May 15th, 2019, 10:27 am

as we've debated before, this is the only logical outcome to the conundrum of cheating schools like ku and lsu paying players either directly or through the adidas's of the world. let players contract directly with adidas and that shady part of recruiting goes away.

“This group will bring together diverse opinions from the membership — from presidents and commissioners to student-athletes — that will examine the NCAA’s position on name, image and likeness benefits and potentially propose rule modifications tethered to education,” Ackerman said in the NCAA’s release. “We believe the time is right for these discussions and look forward to a thorough assessment of the many complexities involved in this area.”

My thought on a possible solution to this:

You can choose as a player to find your own scholarships for playing at a school (i.e. A "booster" can pay you to go their school. This includes all expenses such as tuition, housing, books, etc). There should be a declaration period so recruiting can be completed and accountability started based on your status.

Funding status used between boosters and schools in order to determine status and payment for the elite athletes. Payments not made directly between boosters and players but rather boosters to schools to players in order to be compliant with NCAA regulations.

As a school, if you allow a player to use his likeness to pay his way through school and play for you, it will cost you 3 scholarships. Athlete has to be enrolled no less than full time.

For basketball, bump scholarships to 15 instead of 13. This would allow you to add 1 elite athlete.
In football, bump to 90 instead of 85. This would allow you to add 2-3 elite athletes.

Pros
1. School no longer has to pay for that athletes tuition which means less risk for the school and money it can invest in its other non-revenue sports
2. Schools won't be able to load up on elite athletes due to scholarship cuts and can even out the conferences P5/G5 as athletes will look to go more places as to not compete for those limited opportunities

Cons
1. Should there be a middle category for partial elite athletes?
2. Doesn't completely eliminate the next tier getting paid, but rather does more to get the top tier athletes spread out

What else Pros/Cons are there and would this be a viable solution?

the viable solution and the one i believe that will come from this effort is allowing third-party contracts between players like dean wade and companies like nike, agents, corporations, or individuals. those contracts will have zero impact on athletes' schools but will have to be approved against some standard set by the ncaa.

Are they going to allow the players to hire an agent for these deals as well? they will need some type of legal and representative advice in entering these contracts.

agents, one would think, would be one of the first approved categories. apparel and shoe companies being a second.

I just think of the guys like Dean, Kam, and barry, could have local deals like commercials and such. If those types could get an extra few bucks, i think it would help in the long run of evening out the field, in that the big boys don't ahve to go to a powerhouse in order to get the extra cash.

If the NBA does away with their 1-and-done, how many elite players will be left to go to college? J/A.

Not as many as I suspected. I thought if more chose to go the NBA route right out of college then those players, who seem to be the main target of the cheating. would be eliminated and maybe it would lessen the problem a little.

Watu, I think it will have completely the opposite effect to levelling the playing field. This favors schools with lots of big money donors, schools in metro areas, schools that get lots of national/regional pub, and media center areas. For instance, KC kid being chased be KU and KSU. KU would, no doubt, have media tie-ins created to put the kid on ads in KC vs being on ads in local Manhattan outlets. This will broaden the gap for smaller, less metro-centric schools. Basically, the biggest losers if this passes are schools exactly like KSU. Biggest winners are UCLA and USC, and big market east coast teams. Second biggest are schools like Texas with the next biggest schools like Duke, etc.
