The DQ didn't cost me, but picking the ride of Irad Ortiz, rather than little bro, Jose, cost me. I would have broken even if the four horse had finished 3rd. Wonder if anyone won the $51,000 one buck superfecta? Crazy race for sure, but i still love to play the ponies. Next up --the Preakness.

I used to go to Holly, Co. once a year for the quarter horse races. None of us were big betters, but we always had a good time. I've been to Hollywood park and turf by the surf. I always liked the horse races. On the other side I went to the dog races in KC 3 or 4 times. They were boring as hell.

I held a meeting in Shreveport, LA sometime ago and for R&R we all went to the horse races.
At the end of the day they flashed up a note on the big board that someone had won (they had a name for it, but I don't remember what it was) that one ticket picked all the winners of each race. The pot was $500,000+
I thought, wow, that is amazing since one of the races a 99-1 horse won.
As we were walking out there is a window where big money winners cash in their ticket and pony up income taxes. There was a little old man standing at the window. And about 20 paces behind him was his wife. I walked up and asked, "Did you win the big pot thingy?" She said, "Yes." I said, "Wow, that is amazing."
With a straight face and zero emotion she says, "Oh, we have won it before."

Chances are very good the guy that had the ticket for all the winners had a combo ticket where he picked lots of combinations to get the winner. He probably spent hundreds, if not thousands, to get it.
The Super would not have had a payout listed unless someone won it. Every bet is paid unless there is a stated carryover before the race is run. If no one had the exact ticket then it rolls to those with the closest tickets. This is pari-mutuel, so the money is paid out.
I have been to 40+ horse races and more dog races than that. I find horse racing to be slow with a race every half hour. The dogs run every 15 minutes and you really need to be ready to bet the next race. For me, it was much easier to handicap the dog races. I loved the track in KC. We used to have a dog track in the Omaha metro area as well.
I went to Ruidoso Downs many years ago and they had about half quarter horse races. Some ran only 350 yards. You waited for half an hour to watch a race that was over in 15 seconds. I do like to watch the standardbreds. The pacers make for a fun time. The Little Brown Jug is good racing if you can find it on TV.

Zoltar, I've never hit the big bucks at the hoss tracks -- and I've been to many. Most I won was $375 at Turf Paradise in Phoenix. Hit the trifecta, plus had win, place and show tix for the 3 winners. Last race of the day. Pocketed the money and flew home.

I didn't realize there was still that much horse and dog racing. I thought casinos had about wiped them out.

Horse racing is still very popular in many areas. Thoroughbreds, standardbreds and quarter horses. Dog racing is becoming much harder to find. FL is phasing it out in the next three years. Too many people would rather sit in front of a slot machine. Most of them losing their social security money each month.
At the KC dog track years ago on a night where the top dogs were running down for a final race that had a purse of $1 mill I won two supers and three trifectas. I suspect many others did as well as I only took home a total of just over $200. One of the supers only paid $18 on a $1 ticket. I probably bet $6 or $8 in a combo wheel to win back $18. I will never forget that poor payout on a super.
If you ever have a day off during the week and are near a casino go to see the crowd. Busses take retired folks, many in wheelchairs, to gamble and lots will play 3 slots at the same time. The places in Council Bluffs, IA are always full of people in their 70's and 80's but it is worse on a weekday as you might expect.

Oh yeah. Been to the casinos. Only time I ever played was at Niagara Falls when we had $11 worth of loonies and toonies left over. We ended up with $24. Had a friend who loved craps. Went to a concert at the casino in Osceola, IA. Can't handle the smoke.Zoltar wrote: ↑May 22nd, 2019, 6:46 pmHorse racing is still very popular in many areas.
