What’s wrong with the women’s team?

Post by pipe95 » December 1st, 2019, 10:05 pm

Not much action on this board lately.

Seen the girls lost before their trip, but counted that as missing several key players.

Then to lose to Memphis , who I think was picked towards the bottom of their league.

Then to lose to MSU

I’ve read on the net this was going to be maybe Mittie’s most athletic team. I thought everything I read on the net was true? Haha

I’ve believed in Mittie, and always thought his recruiting was decent. But after the butt whipping in the tourney last year, missing out on Emily Ryan, and a poor performance to start the year, what should I think?

I will let things play out this year. This is , what, year 6?

You should think that it's early in the season and that this Lady Cat team will be MUCH better by mid-conference play. Akoya is becoming a force. Peyton is a steady, reliable hand. All the rest are still improving. Relax. We'll be okay.

Mittie is not a good coach. That is what is wrong. I'll agree that this is probably the best team Mittie has ever had (excluding Lewis/Weseman Sr. Year), but that was Debs team really. With Williams and Lee down low, this team could be really good down low. But they both had double doubles against MSU, and we still lost.

Seems like the 2 things that are killing this team right now are:
1. They dont know how to get the ball into the post often enough. All they have is the lob over the top from the perimeter. 1 out of 4 are too deep and go out of bounds. 1 out of 4 are short and stolen. This team does not value the basketball, and that's on coaching. Against MSU there were 4 or 5 straight possessions several times where we didnt even get a shot off due to turnovers. (they had 22 total in the game). Think about that. That's 22 possessions, in a game lost by 5, where we dont even get a shot off!
2. This team is pretty soft. The refuse to lose mentality just isnt there. If the womens team had a play hard chart like the men, it wouldn't be close. Macke is probably the only 1 out there who genuinely looks pissed when we turn it over or give up easy baskets. This team needs a leader on the floor to light a fire under them. That falls on Williams as a senior. But, I just dont think it's her personality to do some butt chewing. But someone needs to.
As i said before. On paper, probably the most talented team Mittie has had. Probably top 4 team in the conference. But they mentally arent anywhere close to that. THAT falls on the head coach. If this team finishes below their preseason pick. He needs to pack his bags. But I've felt that way, well before this season. The Mountain West is probably his ceiling. Hope he gets this team going in the right direction fast. The attendance looks awful at the games now. And worse every year. These 3 straight losses certainly didnt do anything to get people to want to come watch this team underwhelm.

The biggest problem with women's bb is that Kayla Goth graduated. She was talented, tough as nails, and willed the team to several wins a year. Goth cannot be replaced by one player and has not been replaced successfully by a collection of players. That fact is not a result of lack of effort.

The biggest deficiency on offense for the team is the lack of an effective point guard

  • Granted, catl, this team needs a point guard to direct the team with leadership! Last night against UIM freshman Ebert looked very confident considering she has not previously played that role! She certainly has shown she is capable of becoming a major factor with more playing minutes.

I repeat: I think this team is making progress. Getting better with every game Agree that Macke shows the most emotion in a game. Patience is the key word for this team.

Yes Ebert looked decent given how raw she is at the college level. Seems similar to Goth (who wasnt a true pt guard to start either). Dont know if she will put up the #s that Goth did in terms of points. Goth had a really good midrange game. If Ebert can put up assist #s like Goth, it will help this team a ton.

As for last night. I know the opponent was basically the equivalent of an Emporia or Fort Hays type opponent, but I did seem a more concerted effort in valuing the basketball and finding less risky passes to the post. Incarnate is small so that help a lot. But at least it gave them some promise and a glimpse of what this offense can be like.

Lastly, Lee is the real deal. Havent seen a post player at the freshman level come in with that soft of a touch and patience on the block in a long time. She has potential to be an All American before her career is over. Now, if only she could teach Mawein how to put a butt on a body, call for the ball, catch it high, keep it high, and finish.

Amen on that last statement on Mawein.

Lee is going to be the real deal if she stays healthy.

agree with catl and oldcat. the major problem with this team is at point guard. unfortunately, harris is not the answer. she is no scoring threat so the other teams just sag off and dare her to shoot. she makes too many turnovers. she telegraphs her passes on the perimeter and forces toomany passes in traffic. she also throws bounce passes low at the big's feet which ca't be handled. on defense she is too small. in the two games in the bahamas the opponents taller guards took her off the dribble into the paint and scored over her at will. noone has mentioned her but i think our best option at this point may be savannah simmons. unforunately she has missed the last four games due to a lower leg injury. she is 6'1" and a good on ball defender. in the first three games she showed that her shooting has vastly improved. this is also her second year in the program.

this team now has no room for error. they are reallisticly facing coming out of the non-conference schedule with a 6-5 record , with remaining road games at #20arkansas and lastweek's #1 oregon. if that happens they are going to have go at least 13-5 in the big 12 to make the ncaa tourney.
