Portal 2024

Post by SCKSCat » March 9th, 2024, 10:05 am

Just checked Joe Tipton's Twixter account.
Man the rush to the portal has begun.
Michael Potter's brother who played for Pepperdine has entered, looks good.
At least the Portal allows a team to get better quicker, but whiff or strike out, it can have ugly consequences.
I feel fo a mid major team that finds a 3 star player and coaches them up to be good and then lose them to a NIL laden team.
I still fear.NIL may ruin college basketball like money has ruined major league baseball.

It would be great to get an experienced center out of the portal. Not to sound negative, but we should probably temper our expectations of finding a five-star or upper four-star guy. The blue blood schools with lots of NIL money will have the inside track on these guys. That doesn't mean we can't find good players in the portal because we have already. It just means we need to find solid players who will be meaningful contributors.

The best thing we can do is to get talented high school players to commit to us and stay for four years, while using the transfer portal to plug in one or two guys per year for depth or fill holes on the roster. That being said, in this current environment of college basketball, that's becoming darn near impossible.

Pick 'Em

I think this staff will be in on 5 star talent. I think Tang and staff appeal to recruits, they will just have to show KSU has the ability to win regularly and probably the opportunity for playing time could help. KSU really only has a guy like Kaluma who shows he has the ability to be an every day starter if he returns. All the other spots should certainly be up for grabs to whoever proves worthy.

I’m still waiting for this staff to recruit a difference making big. I believe there will be several in the portal.

Up to the last we were projected to land Ngongba. Duke swooped in with NIL and persuaded him to come to Duke.
Supposedly we now have a new NIL collective that has a war chest to keep us competitive. So maybe we can land some prime player or good solid role players

We need to score some really good players in the portal & return some of our younger players to develop: Colbert, Ames, RJ Jones, etc.

Maybe have to keep an eye on Ngonba. Duke just signed who was supposedly the #1 5 man this past week. And they have the #1 overall recruit with Flagg and he’s a big 4. Ngonga may find he’s not in the immediate plans for Puke.

Jevon Porter.

He averaged 16.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game on 42.5 percent shooting from the field. His decision comes in the wake of Pepperdine parting ways with head coach Lorenzo Romar.

A 6-foot-11 sophomore out of Columbia (Mo.) Porter former four-star prospect in the national 2022 class. He is the brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. and Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter.

Porter will have two years of eligibility remaining once he picks his next school His favorite book is the Bible.

The NCAA has updated its transfer portal memo, making it clear that multi-time transfers who transfer during or after the current academic year can be eligible to play at their new school next year without a waiver.

It will hard to retain players to build a program. Bench players will want to move on to get playing time somewhere else. Like what happened to KU.

The irony of it is that really good players are going to the mid-majors because of the portal. It is harder than ever for high school players to make a team even in D2 these days, much less a mid major.

Agreed. I like Tang's resume so far. If he can keep building, sooner or later KState will be attractive. He is building the right culture at KState, and hopefully, that will keep some good players from jumping to the portal after every season.
