I was in the Air Force in Alamogordo NM in 1968-71-just up the road from Las Cruces. Lou's 1970 New Mexico State team had Sam Lacy, Charlie Criss and Jimmy Collins. Not bad. Nate Archibald was 80 miles down the road at UTEP. Saw a lot of good basketball that year. For those that don't remember the NCAA tournament in those years had regions that were really regions. New Mexico State was in the west region and before 1970 had to get by UCLA to get to the Final 4. They never did but a couple years they gave UCLA a better game than any other opponent in the tournament. He might have had 2 or 3 more Final 4s but for that. When they finally got to the Final 4 in 1970 (maybe beating K-State along the way as I recall) they faced...UCLA. Not the most charismatic guy, but a heckuva coach.

In 1964 I became the p-b-p announcer for Abilene Christian and Hardin-Simmons, where Lou Henson coached from 1962-66, was about a mile down the road from our campus. The two teams played each other and I remember coach Henson very well.
