Top ten worst losses

Post by JazzCatDRP » June 25th, 2020, 1:49 pm

Inspired by the other thread on top wins, and a conversation between some friends of mine...let's go down the rabbit hole of suck. What are the worst losses in K-State history? Base it on whatever marker for sucktitude you want: blowouts, implications on the season, implications on streaks, etc.

Personally, I'm sticking to Snyder era and onward cause I'm too young to really remember Austin Peay and some of those...

Here's my top ten:

1) 98 CCG
2) 2012 Baylor
3) 2004 KU streak ender
4) 2000 CCG
5) 2000 OU regular season game
6) 2003 Fiesta Bowl
7) 2004 Fresno State
8) 2014 (I think) Auburn
9) 99 Nebraska
10) 2018 Iowa State

Ya probably ought to start when Snyder began, because before that, the list is long. But your top 2 are correct.

I think the Conference Championship game against TAM in '98 will be a universal selection. After the game, I, like Snyder, felt like I was dealing with a death of someone close. It was a heart-breaker.

I can't remember all the sad losses, but the last minute loss to Colorado on the last game of the season in Boulder ranks right up there.

Any loss to KU is an anomaly!

jazz, you nailed it. i'd put auburn higher because lockett never missed a catch like that his whole career college or pros, but that's just quibbling.

How can you leave off 2013 North Dakota State?

2015 OU in Manhattan 55-0 loss
2012 at Baylor loss 24-52 we were undefeated and ranked #1 at the time. They were not ranked. (that one is on the list)
2010 Syracuse in Pinstripe bowl. 34-36 loss due to the 15 yard penalty for saluting the crowd.
Win the dang day!

The two most despairing losses I witnessed were prior to Snyder, the loss to Austin Peay, a I-AA team that went 2-9 for the year (with one of the wins being against K-State) and celebrated their win against the Cats by doing the gator in the middle of the field, and a 31-28 loss to Louisiana Tech which K-State led 28-7 at halftime. If I remember right, it was Paul Watson's first game as starting QB and he was just fantastic in the first half. He got his shoulder injured early in the third quarter and missed the rest of the game. A couple of possessions the Cats had after that were three incomplete passes for a quick three and out while running about 30 seconds off the clock. Parrish was a terrible head coach. It really is true that Bill Snyder saved football at K-State. You really had to see how bad they were to appreciate what Snyder accomplished.

@ToledoCat#3 If you're talking about that loss in Boulder for the last Big XII game Colorado played, then yes, that loss sucked SO bad. I was there in the first row right behind the Colorado bench (can't remember how I got those tickets). I'll say this to the day I die... CU fans were THE worst fans to be around (Mizzou is a close second).

In that game, Collin Klein played quite a bit and did fairly well. He got injured and Carson Coffman came in and played his usual way.

Up high on my list is the 1993 Iowa State game (yes, the STREAKER game). Also #1 on my list for COLDEST K-State game I have ever attended.

1 - 98 Champ game by far the worst loss. The Cats never ever should have lost that game. Still don't like A&M to this day.
2 - 2013 NDSU is right up there for me as well - losing to any Div II team, I'm sorry just shouldn't happen. Plus I work with a lot of ND folks and took a lot of crap
3 - 2012 Baylor - I suspected KSU wasn't really number 1 and that kind of proved it, but was tough to take.
4 - Marshall 2003 - I was in the hospital after my 1st daughter's birth watching that game with so many emotions. I was so pissed and happy being a new father at the same time. KSU was a damn good team that year.
5 - Ohio St Fiesta Bowl - Roberson doesn't have that distraction they beat (the) Ohio State. They'd never live that down losing to lowly KSU.
6 - 1997 loss to NU was painful - lot of hype for KSU and got beatdown by Nubs in Lincoln. I worked in Omaha at the time and took a lot of crap.
7 - 1998 Loss to ISU after having the big lead. I live in Des Moines and work with a bunch of ISU alum - took a lot of crap.
Seeing a theme here :D
8 - 1998 Purdue - Sliding all the way to the Alamo and then laying a turd after the bitter disappointment of the Champ game.
9 - Navy last year in Liberty Bowl. WTF? That was pathetic!
10 - Any KU loss.

Don't know how I forgot about NDSU -- I was at that game. Everything was so hyped. Unveiling of the new west stadium, furling the Big XII championship banner, and then...
