And with it Malone will likely get a new title, like assistant head coach because they had 2 internal options, if you promote one, you have to bump the other a bit to keep him happy.

Goes back to what was said in the other thread, you can't just simply pay Hazleton more to keep him to stay because it has a trickle down effect on other coaches.

And like I said on the other thread, finding guys that take you from 48th to 26th in one year with only 3 healthy linebackers....well they demand to be paid more.

If defense goes back down in rankings, it was penny wise, pound foolish. As revenues will drop well beyond 400+whatever K to match.

Very hard to build anything when mgmt team is constantly shifting.

K-state ain’t Bama. We had our day in the late 90s early 00s but that was a perfect storm. 2012 was a good team. Not great.

So you think Hazelton was the only reason for the improvement in defense? It had nothing to do with a HC that has a background in defense, or a secondary that decided to play press coverage? Or even improvement in players, or a renewed energy about the team, or a different offense that didn't constantly give the ball back to the opponent? You think that KSU will drastically change their scheme after promoting from within, for a coach that has been with CK for 6 years, that it will cause the defense to be worse?

The defense could have improved, or declined, next year, even with the same coaches because opponents are changing as is KSU's roster. Losing a lot of DL depth is going to be a concern no matter who the coaches are. Or on the flip side, getting Hughes back at LB, as well as a lot of the secondary, could the defense improve just by having that?

Not to mention that KSU ran a defense that primarily uses only 2 LB on the field at a time, so trying to emphasize that lack of depth on a position not as heavily used isn't making a great point. Fletcher did come back 1/2 through the year to give them 4 as well.

The coaching staff isn't constantly shifting either. They lost 1 coach, and promoted from within. Klanderman has also been with CK for 6 years. Hazelton hadn't been with CK since 2010-11 season. If anything, you could say that bringing in Hazelton to begin with was more of a shift for the consistency of the coaching staff as a group. Hazelton was one of the few coaches that wasn't either at KSU, or came directly from NDSU.

Almost every Big 12 team has lost 1 assistant coach, with several losing more. I assume they will bring in a LB coach, since none of the existing coaches have much LB experience, to fill that vacant spot and their LB style will probably be in line with what was already being done to maintain consistently. They may even promote Adam Pilapil, who was a defensive quality control coach under Hazelton, and also played as a LB under Hazelton, who could bring the same style of coaching to the LB that Hazelton did as he would be very familiar with that. Even if they don't promote Pilapil, as he is still pretty young, he can help with the transition for a new coach to learn the LB style on the team. Unless of course he leaves to be a grad assistant at Michigan State.

So yes, continue to overreact about not giving a $400k+ raise, as well as any other coaching salaries bumps to make it fair, to a coach that had been at KSU for 1 year, wasn't even the first DC that CK hired, wasn't with the HC previously and likely wouldn't have stuck around from more then 3 years anyways. He was a good coach, but the team isn't going to implode now that he is gone and the cost to keep him for a limited time before he ultimately left was not worth it.

alabama is the classic example of why that was a false statement. and k-state has lost one coach, not a staff.

I have to agree with Ajcat, I loved Coach Haze as well, but anyone that thinks he was the soul reason we improved on defense is a little short-sighted I think. Go back and find Goolsby's quotes about Klanderman and how never learned as much from a coach as he learned from Klanderman in only one year with him.

Like Aj said, we lost 1 coach, which is probably pretty much the norm. I pointed out during the year when everyone was bagging on Messingham that we sure get short-sighted sometimes because the defense had an issue with tackling all year long. Why didn't Haze fix that?? Why did we give up that 3rd and 14 on Texas' winning drive?? Why did we give up that disaster play against WVU?? Why did we give up the HB pass against Navy??

To say we are screwed because Haze is leaving means you feel he is the main reason our defense improved. With that reasoning you also then have to say he is the reason we tackled poorly and we blew three big coverages in important drives to lose games, etc. None of those things were just his fault, just like it was a team effort on the defensive side of the ball all year long.

And no matter who our DC is next year our defense will need to adjust. Haze himself talked about how he didn't want to play Cover 2 and Cover 4 because that is all OU sees and they can execute that in their sleep, so what our defense brought with a more Cover 3 look and some Tampa 2 was an adjustment. But offenses will adjust this year and our staff, with or without Haze, will have to adjust as well, while also breaking in new DT's other thn Wiley.
