Either you believe something can be great, or you don't. Sounds like you fear success.
It's not about believing KSU can or can't be great, it's understanding reality of how things work. If the $1 million a year for Scottie is accurate, that's the 20th highest paid assistant in the nation. KSU can not afford that, it's a simple as that. KSU is not Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, Texas, etc.

Just saw this. Wow. I didn't expect Hazelton to be here very long, but I thought he would be here more than 1 year. I saw an interview with him just a few days ago where he was talking about next season and gave no indication he was moving on. This must have come up fairly quickly.

Oh well. Best of luck to him. Does Coach Klieman make a call to Blake Seiler?

I will bet Hazleton takes at least one assistant with him to Michigan State. Just a guess but that is usually how these things play out.

Clemson. 23,000 students in South Carolina. Which is 13 spots below Kansas on per capita income.

But hey, everyone makes their own reality.

I agree. $1 million a year for an assistant college football coach is just crazy money. In another thread on this board we are discussing the financial strain on the academic side of K-State. We can't afford to fully fund academics yet some here think we were foolish not to match Michigan State's offer. If Hazelton doesn't feel $550,000 a year to coach the defense is enough money then so be it. He's a good coach and we will miss him, but doubling his already huge salary to keep him here for another two years is not worth it, IMO. Best of luck to him at his new school.

But hey, everyone makes their own reality.
Trying to compare KSU to Clemson has nothing with current enrollment and income of the state. There is so much more history that has separated the haves and the have nots and it only continues to grow.

The year before KSU made their first ever bowl game in 1982, Clemson was the National Champion. If that right there doesn't tell you how far the programs were apart, I don't know what will. When Snyder took over the worst college football team of all time in 1989, Clemson had just had 3 straight 10 win seasons and going to their 16th bowl game. Clemson has the 14th most wins in college football history, while KSU has the 6th most losses of all time. You don't close that gap very easily, or quickly, and you certainly can't close that gap when Clemson is winning NCs. Paying 1 assistant to stick around 2 more years before he gets a HC job isn't going to solve the problem either.

Not to mention the disparity in how football is treated in the south, the size of the stadiums, that the closest NFL team to Clemson was in Atlanta until 1995 when the Panthers came to Charlotte and any other variety of factors that changed how each program has grown.

Feel free to live in whatever reality you want, but your going to be constantly disappointed if you think KSU can compete financially with Clemson, or any other school at their level.

Going to be hard when Mel Tucker has filled all 10 of his assistant coaching spots. Hazelton was the 10th, and final, position to be hired.

It will be curious to see what he does with Mike Tressel. Mike was the interim HC and the DC/LB coach. With Scottie being hired to be the DC, and he also has experience with LB, what will Mike do? Is he going to get tagged with a Co-DC title along with Scottie? Although he is being retained, you have to wonder if he is now searching around for a new spot with the news that he won't be the full, and maybe not even the Co, DC anymore. Mike was also previously the highest paid assistant for MSU before the coaching change.

I strongly believe that Coach Klieman will find the right person to fill the DC position. With Klieman being a former DC, we shouldn't see much of a drop off on that side of the ball. The guy I really hope we can keep around is Van Malone. He is a good coach and a great recruiter for us. He may be another one of those coaches that the bigger schools try to lure away.

Reading this it becomes apparent that college is getting increasingly screwed up both in academia and athletics. Money rules and many of our young people graduate neck deep in debt. Time to clean house and realign our priorities.

It dont matter! The next guy who proves his worth will be gone just as fast as coach Haz. Football is all about the benjamins and guess what folks? We only have Franklin's! Get use to it and put your support behind the next guy!
