Re: Jake Rubley 4-star QB commits
Have we ever had a 1 star guy as our starting QB? Not sure we have ever had a 2 star.
Did some checking and we did have a couple 2 star players at QB. With Josh Freeman leaving for the NFL the cupboard was bare for the return of Bill Snyder. The best Bill could do was bring in Grant Gregory who eventually won the starting job from Carson Coffman. Both were 2 stars. That was 2009. The following year Carson Coffman got the job and Collin Klien began getting reps. Klein was a 3 star. After Klien's near magical run we were again without a good QB option and brought in Jake Waters from the jujco ranks. With Jake's departure 2016 may have been the low point for K-State QBs. Joe Hubener (unrated) was the expected starter but the job went to talented but gimpy 3 star Jesse Ertz. When he went down we were down to Joe who didn't even play QB in high school. But he was a battering ram. Despite his deficiencies he still ranked higher than KU among Big 12 QBs. Just look at the following list of Big 12 and it is easy to see that we sucked at recruiting QBs.

It is also obvious that Bill Snyder was a genius at winning with less. When Patrick Mahommes was #4 and Baker Mayfield #5 you know its a pretty good QB league. Yet we somehow held our own.
So basically I stand corrected. The QB position, the most important spot on the field has been a mess. Looks like its over.
QBs in Snyder 2.0
3/4 star Skyler
3 star Klein, Jake, Jesse, Alex, Sams
2 star Gregory, Coffman
? Joe Hubener
9 players, 24 stars.
Average: 2.67 stars

Jeff Schwinn or Adam Helm? Neither we're long term, but couldn't have been too highly rated. Probably both 2 stars.

Just a thought, Carson Wentz was a zero star. I like to see guys play before I believe any of this star crap. BTW, stars don’t measure what’s between a guys ears, the most important aspect of a QB.

For every Wentz, there is 1000 like him that failed. See the other thread, but the odds or making the NFL is much higher for 4 and 5* players then others. And yes, stars and rankings do take into account what scouts see in the QBs ability to read a defense. It's not always easy trying to see that a HS level though, but there is a component to it.
The key is recruiting 4 and 5 star athletes that have a upside. They aren't at the end of their growth curve due to college level coaching since middle school. Multi sport athletes that are 4 and 5 stars are different than single sport athletes that have gone to camps for years.

Hopefully Jake received some advanced instruction from his dad growing up. Those that can do, those that can't teach. J/K teachers.
His dad was pretty good at Tulsa but it didn't translate real well to the NFL.
