Messingham is a problem

I didnt like the hire from the beginning, the one hire I really didn't like. His resume is not impressive at all outside of taking over at OC for NDSU for one year (an absolute well oiled machine) He's predictable and unimaginative, would love to get a young energetic guy at OC.

Now we know why they call him coach Mess! I initially thought it was because of his last name. Silly me!

Second to the last series, we are 2nd down and eight yards to go on about the 25 yard line, and he calls a sweep to the left that goes nowhere. Where did that play call come from? WV had reviewed the film, they pretty much knew the play calling the whole game. At one point I thought I saw 10 in the box, and a run of all things was called.

Power running game is struggling in most games. Lots of other ways to run that will compliment running between the tackles. We had a little success with true option yesterday, (one td off if it), a little success with a wr reciever speed option that got a fast receiver to the outside.

I thought their defense was attacking the middle of our line and to run it successfully, we needed some plays to counter that and get them spread out.

Still wasn't all bad. We gained a lot of yards yesterday and the game was really lost by two passes being intercepted, a mental breakdown in our secondary and the penalty on the missed field goal that let them have 7 points instead of us having the ball with good field position.

I don't have a particular problem with Messingham. He didn't forget how to call a football game between the OU and KU wins and now. Yes, ultimately he calls the plays before snap, but Skylar has to read the defense at the LOS can call audibles - or in the very least know what to do or where to go when the called play breaks down. We didn't do well against the run blitz. If you want to gamble as a play caller, then we should have called more option, end arounds, jet sweeps, and stretch plays. But if you do that too much, the defense will adjust which then opens things up between the tackles.

To me, it still just comes back to lack of effort - or as Snyder would say "spirit". You gotta show up every week with a painted face and a dark heart, like we did against KU. Maybe someone should volunteer to create a bulletin board material website to keep the kids motivated. (that's sarcasm for those that didn't pick it up). But you get the point.

still here. still saying give this time. there will be ups/downs. it's YEAR ONE. next year will be YEAR TWO.

the one constant? fans and our lack of patience.

go back and check the goals at the first of the year:
1. 6 wins; bowl eligible.
2. beat KU.

yes or no?

I was concerned about messingham from day 1, there is nothing in his resume that impresses me.

I was concerned about messingham from day 1, there is nothing in his resume that impresses me. For example he was part of the circus at ISU under Rhoads that let us steal game after game from them and at Upper Iowa University (his lone HC gig) he was 3-17.

I’m not giving up on him yet. Must admit that some of the plays he dialed up in the second half were head scratchers.

For whatever reason, he has a QB that doesn’t like throwing to the middle of the field. His best two RB’s aren’t nearly 100% and the the third RB is serviceable at best. Let’s see how he recruits and what he can do with what I’m sure he expects to be better athletes.
