To some people making $2M a year and just specializing in one thing and not have the stress of running a whole program is enough. Not everyone wants to be a head coach. $2M in South Carolina is a fortune. Look at Bud Foster at Va. Tech - never ants to be a head coach.

But, I noticed how Clemson relied on the QB to run for crucial first downs down the stretch. I think Coach K will throw the ball as much as needed, but the run will be the foundation of the offense.

As an aside, I got to wondering why Venables has not taken a head coaching gig. He might possibly have done a personal assessment of his pros and cons and decided that he doesn't have the internal makeup to be the head coach. Perhaps, not good at public relations, or fund-raising, or multi-tasking every day of your life, or delegating authority, etc. Probably isn't the case, but it might be.

My concern about Klieman, although I'm sure he's a smart man and will try to adapt, is coming from the Bison faithful who have bedded down over here. First off, I freely admit that I did not watch a single play that NDSU ran this year. IF smash-mouth football is what he plays, he should have carefully watched what Clemson did last night. Not altogether unlike what Snyder's defenses have done here lately although with much less talent than Clemson. They gave up some yards but turned it up in the red zone. Alabama was the more smash mouth team but Clemson threw the ball all over the yard. The quick pick-6 did wonders for the psyche of the game. Clemson really had little success running the football until late in the game. The way the rules are and the way the game is played and the way the players play, it seems like the key to winning now is passing to set up the run. I prefer balance. A team like the 2012 Cats is going to be very rare now.
This year, in 24 red zone attempts, the Bison gave up 9 TDs and 4 FGs. A .542 percentage, best in all of D1 football.

Come back in a year or two or three then have this discussion. NDSU is not KSU. FCS is not FBS. Hopefully a good measure of Klieman’s success translates to KState. A 7-win season next year would be a great start.

Seeing the caliber of athletes playing tonite and realizing that KState will never sniff this level of game again is frustrating
This is exactly what I was thinking all night. The level of talent was unreal to watch. So far above us that it seems impossible that we'll ever get there, but I went to KSU from 95-00 so there is hope.....maybe.....someday....

This is the very reason why going to an 8-team (or more) playoff would give schools, other than a very select few, SOME hope they could find lightning in a bottle once every 10 years or so and get invited to a playoff game. The current structure makes it all but impossible for the KStates of the world to have much hope. With but a handful of the same teams in the running every year, I would think the game would be well served to change. The NFL has wild card games that are somewhat anathema.

It's more than just expanding the playoff in my opinion. Get back to the natural rivalries and away from this ridiculous super conference model and
reduce scholarships from 85 to 80ish. That will piss a lot of the hoarders off, but if it's truly a meaningful playing we want, you gotta have more balance. Too much stockpiling of talent and too much of an advantage for east and south (not just talent, but TVs, timezones) to make it balanced. It's boring right now.

I think that the 4-team playoff system decreased the chances of a small school stealing a national title and an 8-team playoff only makes it worse. Take 2012 as an example. If Colin Klein wasn't so banged-up, K-State probably wins that game in Waco and finishes the season unbeaten. The BCS championship game is likely the two unbeatens, K-State versus Notre Dame that I think K-State wins. Could that 2012 K-State team have won two games if one of the games was against Oregon or Alabama? Unlikely. The odds go down even more so when another game is added against a top eight team. The more rounds that are added, the more advantage goes to the big boys who can consistently recruit top 10-15 classes to have that great talent and massive depth. The big boys are in favor of an expanded playoff because it helps them more than the uppity small schools who pop up once in awhile.

I understand what you are saying; however, my point is that, under the current layout, those uppity small schools never get a chance. Maybe, under an expanded playoff, an 8 seed could knock off Alabama or Clemson then get ko’d in the semis. Today, that same team is in a bowl that no one cares about.

One thing nice to not be discussing is that there were 3 unbeatens this year going into the bowls. If we didn't have the 4 team playoff format, there would have been a bunch of drama around leaving out one of the unbeatens. ND certainly wasn't good enough, but it woukld have been hard to deny them a shot in the discussion. This year, no question. All was settled on the field. Looking back, this is so much better now. An 8 team playoff would be even better IMO. 5 P% conf champs + 5 at large bids. Win your conference = you are in. Want to win the NC, win some football games. No beauty contest or TV set quota. All settled on the field.

I think the overall interest in college football will wane if the same teams are always in the playoffs. That’s why the NFL model is so successful parity with salary caps and draft. A Cleveland has a chance to build up their program. KState had a few windows in the past but that window is closed forever in the current format. We have given up season tickets simply because there really isn’t an end game except maybe a lower tier bowl. Oklahoma and Texas will continue to stockpile talent and most other schools not named KU has passed KState in all aspects.
