"I think in the NFL it took five, six or seven years to shed the label of just being a strong arm," Elway said.

Elway ultimately became one of the all-time greats. Along the way, his arm helped him make some of the best plays you'll see at the position.

"It's a bonus to have one," Elway said. "There aren't many quarterbacks who have succeeded without a strong arm. Anybody who says having a big arm is overrated is wrong."

The excitement has been building all offseason long for the Kansas City Chiefs offense. From the signing of Sammy Watkins to the torch-passing to Patrick Mahomes to just knowing that Kareem Hunt and Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce will only get better, the Chiefs are absolutely loaded.

What’s been lost in that focus is how good a team’s offense can be for the defense—not in the way that a good offense releases the pressure for the defense to win games. Instead, it’s in the day-to-day battles, best exhibited in the preseason as fans come to watch players go up against one another each day at the height of competition. They’re playing for their very jobs.

While everyone wants to see how quarterback Patrick Mahomes looks, other positional groups will take most of the study. If this were a regular season game, it would be a great matchup to watch Mahomes take on fellow 2017 NFL Draft quarterback DeShaun Watson. Instead, we will likely only see the two quarterbacks in the first quarter.

Head coach Andy Reid typically gives each quarterback one quarter during the first preseason game. We will get to see all four get a turn with a part of the Chiefs offense. Which quarterback will play the best behind Mahomes and fight for a spot on the final roster?

What should fans be watching for is who is getting the most time on the field? Which players are starting with the ones and twos? Are players that are playing with the deeper groups dominating the weaker competition?

While most of the news coming out of training camp has been good, that’s typical of training camp. It’s rare to hear news of specific players struggling or not looking the part. Until these players take on some real competition with full contact and pads, we won’t know what the team has. We will get our first glimpse of the Chiefs roster tonight.

After we played Mahomes and roughed him up repeatedly, and he threw for some insane number of yards on a decent secondary, I thought he was the best college QB I have watched.

Kept hoping the Chiefs would pick him, but figured they would never make such a bright decision. He looks like Elway 2.0 to me.
how many years did elway play before he won a superbowl? how many years were broncos fans looking to 'get someone better'? somone who wasn't too old and getting close to being washed up?

Sure hope Mahomes is the second coming of Montana, but suspect he has a very long road ahead of him if he ever gets there.
I would say he looks pretty good already...like Michael Jordan good.

I am glad Mahomes is no longer in college and I am very glad he is a Chief.

Defense is meh. Don't know if they show in the playoffs. Could be epic failure.
