Re: Serious Question
Seriously, I think we need to get Tbonespop comments, on coaching, to Coach K. It's hard to imagine he hasn't had that in mind but you never know, and it certainly hasn't shown, to date! TOTALLY agree with dropping any passes over 20 yards from the game plan, and stay within the skill set of the QB, don't attempt, at the teams expense, to make he and the wide receiving corp, something they, currently, are not! The 3rd play of the second half is a perfect example of Avery's lack of connecting on the long ball, and it created an instant 3 and out, something that was the final nail in the coffin at 2 minutes into the 2nd half.

Well, if you believe recruiting rankings, we have decent talent at WR.
Jackson was a 3* transfer from Ole Miss. Not bad, but not great.
Johnson was a 4* transfer from Iowa
Spivey was a really high 3* (almost 4*) - and he's very athletic
Davis was a high 3* - and he too is very athletic
Jayce Brown was the lowest ranked WR of the bunch and its hard to argue he's not the best of the bunch
Cephas was a high 3* transfer from Penn State
That's not a bad bunch based on recruiting evaluations. I find it hard to believe we whiffed on all their talent evaluations and there is no talent in that bunch. Again, WR coaching???????
Trae Davis was a 4* recruit this last class
SPD was a high 3* recruit this last class
The WR room is littered with high 3* and 4* talent, and some big body / big frame kids. I find it very hard to believe that we just missed on their talent evaluations because evaluating talent at the WR position is one of the easiest positions to evaluation talent at. We've had too many consecutive years of above average WR recruiting and yet average at best WR play to not look at coaching and scheme.
I don't think it's as much the jimmies and joes in this case, I think it's Xs and Os along with lack of development. Coaching matters.

They recruited a running QB. Why did they recruit a running QB in the first place? All they need to do is answer that question, then look at their play calling to see part of the problem. If you're afraid he'll get hurt - don't waste time recruiting that style of QB. Seems simple.Ksuminnesotacat wrote: ↑September 22nd, 2024, 6:21 pmSo in other words they are not utilizing and playing our game geared towards the talent we have.?

i'm a long way from being an expert - unlike others here - having spent a lot of time on the bishop heelan bench. but i wonder if some of this has to due with coach wells trying to remake avery's game to meet next level expectations. coach klieman talked a lot this spring about getting more from the passing game. it looks like avery is too often not running to open turf but chucking it down the field instead.
my guess is that we will see a lot more run game saturday v. the pokes. maximizing strengths and minimizing weaknesses generally is a good operating principle in business and sports.

In all seriousness, though, I think Avery will be fine. He just needs more experience and growth. Games like the one at BYU are part of that growing process. He will learn more from this loss than if we had beaten BYU by 30 points.

Yep... I'm far more concerned with a few other things. Avery is just learning on the go. He definitely needs to play with more swagger. Punish teams with your athleticism, young man.

I too think Avery will be fine with some more experience and maturity. But what really sucks is that, because they burned his redshirt last year (unnecessarily in my opinion), he has already exhausted about 1/3 of his college eligibility. So I hope he develops quickly because his remaining time will fly by.

He has 3 full seasons, plus a grad year if needed. He'll be fine.powercat95 wrote: ↑September 23rd, 2024, 1:17 pmI too think Avery will be fine with some more experience and maturity. In a perfect world, everyone would choose hard work, morals and ethics over obscene money and fame. And everyone outside of Lowrents would be required to be a red blooded, card carrying Payhawk hater.
