CK plans on holding 10 spots out of 25 man class for transfers

This according to GT in an interview he gave recently. That seems like an awful lot and a big big gamble even though the transfer portal is jam packed with players right now.

Kinda feel like Weber’s approach to 2021/2022. Time will tell.

Kind of crazy, but glad to see that Klieman is trying to adjust to the new recruiting landscape. Also makes me feel like the staff is very happy with the players they were able to get this year (so far). Incoming transfers have had a big impact in the last 2 seasons, and I expect this year to be no different.

agree, hcck is just an early adapter to the realities of roster management in today's portal environment. on a related note, lance robinson ended up at tulane.

I'm wonder if it will be something around the lines of holding 10 spots for transfers, but if they don't find the right transfers, they don't just leave the class 10 short, but use them on backup plans, late developers, JUCOs, etc. This may mean that those local KS players that are borderline scholarship players will have less of a chance for a spot at KSU unless transfers don't happen.

I wonder if that is just a short term reaction to the current situation, dealing with covid and players getting an extra year and all. Hopefully, those walk-ons will get the opportunity to earn a scholarship the the portal things bears no more fruit.

I imagine these aren't hard numbers. What I have a hard time understanding is how the scholarships work. If 10 players enter the portal, are those scholarship slots not available to bring players from the portal? Or do they count against the available scholarships for the year?

if players leave early due to graduation or the nfl, those scholarships are not available. if they transfer to another school, they are available. if they enter the portal, it's up to the school to decide if they want to pull that scholarship. schools still are limited to 25 scholarships/year and 85 overall. unless something's changed recently. ;-)

I like this approach. By accessing the portal you can find proven commodities who have validated themselves at the D-1 level. They have already been vetted and we can make a better decision on which ones will work in our system. They are more mature, already trained, and usually ready to play. Also they have already used their free transfer and are more likely to stay put.

It is analogous to going the divorcee route when looking for a spouse. Some will never come around, but many have learned from their experience. If they married a bad boy they may have learned techniques which may be beneficial in future endeavors. ;-) They made a bad choice when young and will appreciate being well treated. So you have to be careful but there are some very good ones. With both the divorcee and transfer markets you have to choose wisely.

With an 18 year old straight out of high school there are almost always growing pains in making the transition to college life. A young guy who thinks he is all world, is homesick, or is trying to fit in is a constant transfer risk. Often after years of training, coaching and baby sitting they are just gone with the wind. Academics are also a concern and there is also the risk that they may not be D-1 material. Going the transfer route with older guys will mitigate these issues. I think the perfect candidate would be one who red shirted then played one year so has 3 years of eligibility remaining.

Too many top rated high school kids go to the sexy big time schools where they wait 2 years behind a starter then get recruited over with NFL talent. Then they ride the pine without ever being given a real chance to prove themselves, My guess is there is a gold mine of talent who are field ready and faunching at the bit to prove themselves at chip-on-the-shoulder U. I say bring 'em on. Many have been subject to some very good coaching and may bring new approaches, training ideas and techniques along with better talent. You're never too good to learn more.

I like this avenue better then going with juco guys. Most went to juco for a reason. The most talented there often had issues with grades, behavior, or similar problems, As we have seen those problems often come with them. Also it normally takes more than a year to get the juco players up to D-1 speed. I'd like to hear Bill Snyder's take on the portal as a recruiting source.

It will be very interesting to see how this works but could be the best approach to dramatically improve our overall talent level.

I don't know why you hold 10 spots if you are able to recruit good players out of high school to fill those spots. You may very well lose 10 scholarship players to transfer anyway.
However, a school can not pull a scholarship to force a transfer. Scholarships are guaranteed if academic and behavior standards are met. All a coach can do is encourage a transfer, ie telling the player he won't have a role on the team.

At the end of the day, Klieman will have to do what he thinks gives him the best team. We can judge him on wins and losses.
