Soccer 2018

Post by MarqH » August 4th, 2018, 3:13 pm

After a great World Cup, time for soccer season. Looks like K-State's soccer team is ready to build off of last year. Growing pains and being the first season in the Big 12, I think this year could be better. Coming off 1 conference win (at Kansas), nowhere to go but up right? Lost a great goalkeeper in Larkin, will see if her replacement can fill that role. Hopefully more feel for timing and chemistry to score more goals. Lots of 1 goal deficit losses last year. If the team can find a tandem like Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, Rapinoe's service and Morgan's finishing is magic. Looking forward to the season ahead.

How often is Big 12 soccer televised?

Some schools show live matches on their websites. I know K-State had some. As far as Big 12 specifically, might try the regional fox sports channels. This webpage shows K-state's schedule and either audio only or hopefully some live video as well. http://www.kstatesports.com/schedule.aspx?path=wsoc

Looking back on their 2017 schedule, forgot they switched everything to ESPN3. Plus broadcasts on Cox Kansas. You can use the Tunein app to get 101.5 K-Rock out of Manhattan to listen to games. Mitch Fortner does a great job calling the match.

The KU game is the only match I saw last season. Miranda Larkin was sensational in goal that night. KU really stepped up the pressure in the last few minutes but our girls never flinched.

Yes, love watching a team holding on to a 1 goal lead and the other team throwing everything at them to score the tying goal. Makes for an intense match. Among other things, the running clock so no stoppage of play every 5 minutes. Makes for a nice 2 hour window including overtime if necessary that ends with a golden goal or draw.

K-State wins 1-0 against preseason A-10 favorites Saint Louis. St Louis pretty much dominated the first half. But I thought things started to change after the subs came in. The second half K-state picked it up and looked a lot more composed. Then Mauck puts away the winning goal around the 82nd minute.
Malsy did a good job as goalkeeper. What can you say about Sutter though? Only that when she went down with an injury you hold your breath. Hall seems to get stronger as the game goes on. Baxter was a spark. Wagner had some moments. Cramer always with the energy. I like the play of Fisher from England. Davis' speed is dangerous. I can't help but think there should be more production out of Entz. Talent is there but I feel either she doesn't get enough touches and just disappears at times. Maybe seek to get her the ball more or try to. She need to be more dominant with the ball and look to create her own shot and more goals will come. Great win.

Just a tip, if you want more "flavor" from the game, tune into the K-Rock radio broadcast while watching the game. It's not totally in sync with the video but a lot more exciting. Nothing against Brian Smoller and Oscar Montenegro, they do a good job, but Mitch Fortner brings the heat. GOALLL!

4-0 Cats win vs Oakland. Can you say dominant. That was proper soccer. Hate when a team decides to start in a defensive formation like Oakland did in the first half. All that does is let K-State be aggressive and Oakland was just soaking up the pressure. First half stats showed that. Second half they made K-state defend a little but of course that opened it up for K-state to score. Could have been even more lopsided but it was a great team effort all around.
Everyone did a great job. Hall did have a flub on a weak back pass but no harm done. Love Rocha on the backline. She was solid along with Kalkofen. Entz keep your head up that goalkeeper just guessed right you'll get yours. Cramer holy $#!% that goal. Love Baxter's work rate, opened my eyes, she earned that goal. Liking Davis, she took her time and lined up that shot. Also shes got that little heel flick move going on. Fisher looks like a D1 player. Fair play to you. That was a great match to watch.
