2023 KSU Volleyball
Re: 2023 KSU Volleyball
5-1 is when the setter is in for all 6 rotations. So you have 3 attackers when setter in backrow and then 2 attackers when setter is in front row (setter can attack). 6-2 is when you have your setter come only from the backrow. This way you always have 3 attackers to set. KSU has been using the double sub. I think it is Fernholtz for Izzi and Meyer/Clinton for Hinkle. The plus sides for 6-2 is you get the 3 attackers I mentioned above to allow for more 1:1 hitter vs blocker isolations and the extra attacker could be a better blocker as well. the down sides is that you can run out of subs in the game (this has happened a couple time with KSU) and you split the reps between your setters and hitters need to adjust to each setter.
hope this helps.

To add a bit more to this. You want to try to make the blockers late to get the attackers. ideal would be no blocker can get up (not realistic at this level), but getting 1:1 or 1:2 with the 2nd blocker late is good as well. However......the most important foundation in volleyball is serve receive and if you can't pass well then you can't use all your hitters effectively (no matter how good your setter is) so why even worry about a 6-2 if passing is a problem. KSU suffers from this poor passing as well (it is better than early in the season) to limit the effectiveness of the 6-2.

I agree with your description of what a 5-1 and 6-2 offense is for the most part and probably for most women’s college volleyball. But while playing men’s club volleyball we played on teams that ran both (mostly a 5-1) but when we ran a 6-2 we didn’t sub. Both setters remained for all rotations, but they we guys who were still tall enough to play front row and so could both hit and block.
And a 5-1 doesn’t relegate you to just two hitters at this level, because the back row attack is something most programs have players capable of executing.
But as you also mentioned, it really doesn’t matter which you run if you can’t serve and pass.

Cats sweep #8 ranked BYU. Held the Cougars under 20 in each set. Play round two tomorrow night.bhoovy wrote: ↑October 23rd, 2023, 4:44 pmI agree with your description of what a 5-1 and 6-2 offense is for the most part and probably for most women’s college volleyball. Just had the announcement show up on my phone. Was shocked. That’s a huge win for the Cats, the new HC and their program.
Big time for sure . Now I have hope again they can make the tournament. I still think we need 4 more wins to be in for sure. 3 wins might get us there but would likely be on the wrong side of the bubble.

I watched the replay of last night’s game and they probably played as well as I’ve seen this year, but I’ve only seen a handful of games. I do think BYU was off. Can’t play that poorly and be ranked #8. I would expect a much different match tonight.
But the Cats passing was so much better and that sets everything else up. They were able to get better sets to hitters and Carter looked like an all American. But Clinton was pretty impressive as well. And their block was very good last night. They were tracking the ball well and then moving their feet to get in good blocking position.
And I really hadn’t been watching all that much so didn’t really notice they had previously ran a 6-2 and just went to a 5-1 last night, but if so, what took so long. Szulczewski is the type of setter that you really don’t lose much when she’s in the front row as she can attack very well with dumps and also blocks quite well.
Hopefully the second match against OU and last night’s game is this team turning a page and stepping it up a level.

5-1 is where we need to stay as we don't have the juice to take full advantage of the 6-2 (lack of passing and hitting). Like you said Izzy is good at choosing when to attack so the defense/block has not release early to help out on the other hitters. Hinkle barely attacked at all last year.
It looks like Mansfield has increased the ceiling of the team over last year , but still needs to work on consistency. No way we should lose to OU and Lipscomb.
volleyball talk site still predicting we need 4 wins to get in the tourney.
