2023 Baseball Season

Post by Civil97 » August 17th, 2022, 7:30 pm

My attempt at the 2023 Roster

2022/2023 Roster (40):

Catcher (3) – Pelletier (R-So), Phillips (So), Lobliner (Fr)

Infield (8) – Cash Rugely (Sr), Goodwin (Jr), Salinas (Jr), Pena (Tr-Sr), Culpepper (So), Day (R-So), Lemke (Fr), Holmes (Fr)

Outfield (8) – C. Johnson (Sr), Hughes (Jr), Jones (So), Lodice (R-Fr), Knight (Tr-So), Queck (Fr), Bennett (Fr), Karl (Fr), Beck (Tr-So,2-way)

RHP (16) – Hassall (Sr), Corsentino (Jr), Fajardo (Jr), Cater (Tr-Sr), Henry (Tr-Sr), Hartis (Tr-Jr), Heyne (Tr-So), Ruhl (R-So), Neighbors (So), Wentworth (R-Fr), Rothermel (So), Mannell (RS-Fr), Jurecka (So), Buss (Fr), Dobberstein (Fr), Evans (Fr)

LHP (5) – Robertson (Tr-Sr), Boerema (Tr-Sr), Beck (Tr-So,2-way), Broeder (Tr-Jr), Wisenbaker (Fr)

Projections:
- 2 open starting spots in outfield, although Jones had a good summer (Johnson- lock)
- SS/3B are locked up
- 2nd base (Salina or Day?)
- 1st base (Peña - Transfer from S. Florida with big pop)
- Pelletier at C (Battle with Phillips?)
- Guess at 4 starters (Hassall, Corsentino, Fajardo, Boerema) Note: Wentworth had TJ surgery in Spring
- Closer (Neighbors had good summer in that role)

* Edit to add transfer RH pitcher, Cater.
* Edit to add transfer LH pitchers, Robertson and Broeder.

Practice started this week and the Fall Roster is up on the K-State website!

Items of note:
- Cash Rugely and Griffen Hassall are both on the roster after being in the transfer portal.
- LHP Transfer from Mizzou, Robertson, is not on the roster, not sure why.
- Lots of transfer pitchers should help relief pitching with some additional lefty options.

I really hope both those two are still on the roster and have decided to stay.

Rugely was a pretty highly touted juco player coming to KSU last year. He didn’t really get a lot of opportunity early in the year. But in the last few series and the Big12 tournament he was beginning to show his talent. And Hassall was a decent Sunday or midweek starter. Don’t know anything about the Mizzou transfer to know if he was a potential starter or more bullpen depth.

Tuesday's (9-27) practice had Cash & Pena working 1st & Salinas working 2nd. Culpepper doing some ss, probably just as back-up. Beck & freshman Dobberstein pitched a couple innings. Maybe some potential, but a lot of sorting out yet to be done. Jones' good batting practice makes him look like a YES for out field.

I have heard that Culpepper is the future at SS and Goodwin is projected at 2nd when he goes pro. Maybe that is an option this spring?

Keep the practice reports coming, Oldcat59, appreciate it!

Report from the scrimmage? Anyone?

From Twitter:
- Won 21-4
- Homeruns (Lobliner, Goodwin, KC, Cash, and Hughes)
- good to see one of the transfer pitchers with a little velo, Corey Cater hit 94 mph on a K.
- Owen Boerama was the starting pitcher

Scrimmage with the Junior College guys was interesting, but not exciting. K-State was way over their heads. Was in hopes Coach might shuffle lineup more after 1st couple of innings. He did late into the game after starters had whooped it up. Biggest surprise was Cole Johnson starting on 1st base. Did pretty good. All 3 catchers are solid players and strong hitters. Catcher Phillips has size and strength to become a beast! Hard to learn much from the pitching rotation. Several freshman got a stab at pitching. The 3 World Series games in early November will give us a better idea whose who and where they might line up Terrence Spurlin was there and was much shocked to see Johnson on first![/size

Hey oldcat, if Cole was at first can you tell us who were the outfield starters? Also who was playing second?

Hughes lf; Jones center; Rugley / Lodice rf. At a couple of practices transfer Pena has played 1st and looked reasonable good. Looked like Coach may have been fishing for player positions!

Hughes in left? Oh brother.

If Jones can hit he might be the best defensive OF.

No Brady Day? That kid can hit its just finding him a place to play in the field as I think 3rd may be his natural position but he’s not replacing Culpepper.

Need to have someone else playing 1st, preferably Spurlin, as you mentioned he was there but he’s not listed on the current roster. Wonder if Day can play 1st??

Need to have Jones, Johnson and Rugley in the outfield. Looks like there was 3 frosh OF’s that came in but no transfer for that position.
