2021 Volleyball

Post by cutshot » July 23rd, 2021, 1:16 pm

Time for a new thread for new season

Recap 2020: Lost 2 good players in Mutiri to Oregon and A. Dixon to Mizzou. First season since 2016 with a winning big 12 record and not finishing last/2nd to last in the Big12. Lost critical match to Texas State and didn't make the smaller tournament window. Possible that even with the win they wouldn't make it since the big 12 was pretty bad out of conf. Carter won fresh of the year.

Losses: Carlson (OH) to Mizzou; Archibong (MB) to Arkansas; Vernon (MB) to Rutgers ; Martin (S) to UCLA; Kuck (L/DS) to Alabama; Hammontree (MB) to Ark State - she has been gone since the spring though

Gains: Halbleib (S) Fr; Ravnsborg (L/DS) Fr; Ramsey (L/DS) Fr; Warner (Opp) Sr transfer from Florida; Bolding (MB) Jr(?) transfer from Jacksonville
Bolding hasn't been officially confirmed, but she in uniform with the team on some of the videos posted.

Martin is certainly a loss and Archibong played well in her limited time due to injury so would have been better if she stayed since we are thin at MB. I was a fan of Kuck's play in 2019, but 2020 was just very inconsistent.

It would seem like Warner is a very good get from Florida. She didn't play much so hard to judge, but the potential is there. Don't know much on Bolding but tall MB. Ravnsborg was ranked in the top 150. I would think KSU has to be looking for another add for MB and maybe OH. I could see Bonde filling the backup OH role since she played there as a Fresh, but that isn't a good solution path. Maybe Mati too, but haven't see her play much so tough to comment.

Projected Starters
OH- Carter, Nembhard
MB- Fernholz, Holleywood/Bolding
S- Adams-Kaonohi
Opp- Warner
L/DS- Morris (probably Hinkle as one of the first DS)

I see KSU as a contender for 3rd in the conf if Warner pans out, 2nd above avg MB emerges, and first contact is at least as good as 2020.
Carter and Nemhard need to remain healthy (probably same with MBs). I don't think we can beat Baylor or UT consistently.

Any thoughts? other good info?

lots of other stuff in play if OU and UT leave the conference for the SEC.

Bolding now officially on the roster. She is kind of a wildcard, but did decent a Jacksonville. Certainly need at her or Holleywood to step up.

Speaking of volleyball….. I was wondering if plans for the new volleyball facility have been put on hold due to the Big 12 turmoil. That’s been Fritz’s excuse for poor recruiting.

Haven't heard update on the update vball facilities since the OU/UT thing was announced. I would have thought Fritz was on the toasty seat going until last season. The team had a decent year, but still fell short of the tourney. I would have guessed she would have been on the same seat this year, but the OU/UT leaving might also get some extra room depending on what happens with the conf. would be hard to get a good coach if all these things are in flux.

Decent start to season so far.
Beat Colgate 3-1
Lost #5 Nebraska 3-1
Lost #21 Pepperdine 3-0
Beat USCB 3-2
Beat San Diego State 3-1

Warner is doing really well and huge upgrade over last season. Hollywood taking the MB2 position so far as Bolding has been hurt. Looks like Smith also got injured in the Pepperdine game. Still need to find solid OH2 between Bonde and Nembhard. Need to also shore up on the passing and service errors. They should be able to win the rest of the the out of conference games (several of the team aren't push overs ).

Decent start to the season, but recent performance not so great.
Lost both to Baylor which probable expected. Split with OU which probably wasn’t good result. Split with WVU which was probably not surprising as WvU is solid team. Lost last night to TcU which was t good either. Team probably not likely to make the tourney again this year unless they turn it around. Path is still there , but going to be tough for them. This team has talent, but just isn’t playing well right now.

Yep. They kind of did the same thing against OU as well. Don't play well at all one night and then play like they should the next. Path to the tourney is still pretty hard unless they show up and get some sweeps in the upcoming week against better teams than TCU. This should have been a tournament team this year.

Survived Tech in five sets. We had a match point in the third set before Tech came back but we won the 5th 15-12. Need to get the sweep tomorrow.
