Mississippi State

Previous Way-Too-Early rank: 19
2017 record: 9-4, 4-4 SEC

Returning starters: Eight offense, eight defense, one special teams

Key losses: OT Martinas Rankin, LB Dezmond Harris, CB Lashard Durr, CB Tolando Cleveland, P Logan Cooke, WR Donald Gray, WR Gabe Myles
Outlook: Moor cowbell? Former Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead takes over for Dan Mullen, who left to become Florida's new coach. Moorhead helped Penn State's offense rank among the best in the FBS, and he might have similar success in Year 1 if quarterback Nick Fitzgerald returns from the broken ankle he suffered in the Egg Bowl.

Moorhead's coaching staff includes former Tennessee defensive coordinator Bob Shoop, who inherits a much-improved unit that brings back all but three starters, including both cornerbacks. Former Green Bay Packers receivers coach Luke Getsy is MSU's offensive coordinator, and former Louisiana-Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth was hired as associate head coach.

The Bulldogs play a nonconference game at Kansas State and SEC road games at LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss next season.

Final 2017 Sagarin Rankings

Mississippi State #17
K-State #30

Who should Mississippi State fear most on the schedule?

Whether ranked or not, every team has, is, and always will understand Kansas State’s potential to upset anybody, combined with the wizardry of coach Bill Snyder.

By Andrew Robert Kovac Jul 10, 2018, 11:21am EDT

While Mississippi State football is in for the long haul as it pertains to this years schedule, one particular game outside of conference play stands alone and should not be overlooked. Following their season opener under the Stark Vegas lights, the Bulldogs travel to Manhattan, KS to face the Kansas State Wildcats, aka K-State, a team that has played spoiler year after year after year. Coached by a college football legend in Bill Snyder, the Wildcats are always a threat, as Mississippi State must be in full force once in Manhattan.

But there is one K-State phenom to focus on and his name is Alex Delton. Delton is a show and a half with every tool necessary in his arsenal. Likely to win the starting job at quarterback, his 2017 was one to never be forgotten. Capped off by winning the offensive MVP in last year’s Cactus Bowl win over UCLA, Delton rushed for 158 touchdowns and three touchdowns.

Comparable to Mississippi State’s Nick Fitzgerald, Delton is a dual threat and/or swiss-army knife. His stat line was off the charts for only playing seven games, as his 637 yards in the air and 500 on the ground were mind blowing, having ignited a spark in Manhattan. Delton added three passing touchdowns and found the end zone eight times as a runner. He will test the Bulldogs’ defense, as any offensive threat in the Big 12 is dangerous.

Almost identical to Mississippi State’s 9-4 record, the Wildcats finished the season at 8-5. A monumental win over Iowa State at home in a rocking Bill Snyder Family Stadium. And in case fans did not know, K-State is known to be one of the game’s toughest environments with a wild student section. With a more than loyal fanbase as such, any opponent should take note, as the Bulldogs will face a tough and intimidating task.

Having said that, the Wildcats are also more than capable of spoiling one’s season on the road. They are scared of nobody and will make the most of any opportunity. Wins at Texas Tech and Oklahoma State reminded the college football world that K-State is indeed what they’ve been since their inception, a spoiler who can go toe to toe with anyone and everyone.

Delton will make the most of every minute on the field, as his name is sure to be mentioned as one of the Wildcats’ primary faces this coming season. He, Snyder, and the K-State crew will put up a fight and make a statement. While it may not be a championship statement, the Wildcats will show out in any bowl.

Coach Moorhead and the Bulldogs will have to give it everything, but are more than capable of taking down K-State in Manhattan. The key is how formidable Mississippi State can be on the defensive side of the ball when faced with the challenge of keeping a threat like Delton in check. Versatile linebackers such as Erroll Thompson, gifted with ability to read the quarterback’s eyes along with speed and agility will need to step up. Look for him and Delton to be in a “Dawgfight” all game long.

Similar in a plethora of ways, Kansas State and Mississippi State may just be one of the year’s best duals. In addition, Fitzgerald’s identical skillset to Delton’s is something to look out for. Bulldogs’ and Wildcats’ fans should be more than excited.

Like K-State, Mississippi State also excels at playing spoiler. Remember the LSU game? Nothing else needs to be said. It is absolutely amazing as to how identical these two are. Make no mistake that the Bulldogs are taking this seriously, as the Wildcats will be in full force from the start of the season onward.

Whether it be Delton, coach Snyder, or anyone donning purple and silver, K-State is no nonsense and are there to win, but win in their own unique way, having become a college football tradition, making the Wildcats a one of a kind franchise. And look out for Delton, maybe the word Heisman can end up next to his name. Bottomline, K-State is one to never be overlooked, as the Bulldogs must be on full alert.

The Mississippi State University for Agriculture and Applied Science,[6][7] commonly known as Mississippi State University (MSU), is a comprehensive land-grant and public research university located adjacent to the city of Starkville in an unincorporated area of Oktibbeha County, Mississippi.[8][9] With 21,353 students at its Starkville campus, Mississippi State has the largest campus by enrollment in the state.[10] It is classified in the category of "R2: Doctoral Universities – Higher Research Activity" by the Carnegie Foundation and has a total research and development budget of $239.4 million, the largest in Mississippi.[11] It is listed as one of the state's flagship universities.[12][13]

Organized into 12 colleges and schools, the university offers over 180 baccalaureate, graduate, and professional degree programs,[14] and is home to Mississippi's only accredited programs in architecture and veterinary medicine. Mississippi State participates in the National Sea Grant College Program and National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program. The university's main campus in Starkville is supplemented by auxiliary campuses in Meridian, Biloxi, and Vicksburg, Mississippi. The 19th and current president of Mississippi State is Mark E. Keenum, a former United States Under Secretary of Agriculture.

Mississippi State's intercollegiate sports teams, known as the Mississippi State Bulldogs, compete in NCAA Division I athletics as members of the Southeastern Conference's western division. Mississippi State was a founding member of the SEC in 1932. In their more-than 120 year history, the Bulldogs have won 21 individual national championships[15] and 30 regular season conference championships. The school is noted for a pervasive baseball fan culture,[16] with Dudy Noble Field holding 17 of the top 25 all-time NCAA attendance records and the school's Left Field Lounge being described as an epicenter of college baseball.[

Nice article written by presumably a Mississippi State outlet, but obviously the writer doesn't know much at all about K-State. Delton's 2017 was one not to be forgotten??? Don't get me wrong, I like Delton, am rooting for him, but...

Like I said, a nice fluff article. Thanks for posting it, however.

College Gameday Possibility??

Georgia @ S. Carolina, but the game is on CBS, second place to get the pick IMO.
Clemson @ aTm with the game on ESPN (My guess is this will be College Gamedays pick)
Michigan @ Ariz State with the game on ESPN, but won't get the pick
UCLA @ OU, but the game is on FOX, no shot
USC @ Stanford, but the game is on FOX, no shot
Mississippi State @ K-State, Gameday could roll right into kickoff, but they won't because they'll be in College Station. There's no way the two lowest profile teams in the SEC and Big 12 get picked.
Colorado @ Nebraska, unless Nebraska beats Akron by 100 in week one, they'll still get passed by. This game will be a major talking point on the show however. They'll probably interview Eric Crouch and Kordell Stewart to talk about the rivalry.

Fun article to read, but I geez, that writer sure loves him some Delton. Even introducing Heisman talk, though he has yet to win the starting job. I like Delton alot, but he still has a lot to prove. Part of this article is probably boost up KSU as much as possible, so MSU will look better afterwards, regardless of the outcome.

One thing that the writer failed to mention, is that KSU has struggled against quality opponents in the non-conf... at least in recent years.

I felt like I slept through most of last season, I missed a lot of the 158 touchdowns that Alex had.

Interesting discussion.

Hello. I'm a MState fan, who has spent a pretty good amount of time in Manhattan, while on TDY to Fort Riley.

Also made a couple of TDY trips to Fort Leavenworth, and visited KC a few times.

Went to see the Royals play, once.
HAIL STATE!!!

Make no mistake, this is a pretty key game for us. We can't afford to slip up against a pretty decent team in Manhattan.. Bulldog fans are already putting this game in the win column, they believe that their d-line is going to crush K-State's o-line. I guess we'll see. Thankfully, we won't get the same SEC replay officials that stuck it to us in Nashville last year.
